What are my chances (egg drinking)

That I’d become sick from drinking eggs (everything but the shell) raw?

It really just depends on how strong your stomach is, I would think. Might I inquire as to why you feel a need to drink raw eggs?

(and I would think most people could take at least one egg and not vomit.)

Depends on what kind of digestion you have and how many eggs.

Rocky. IIRC Stalone said that was a one take scene and no way was he going to do a second shoot.

Paul Neuman sucks down raw eggs in a beer on film, but I can’t remember what flick.

I’ve downed raw eggs a couple times on a dare. It’s psycological. Chinese hotpot in Taiwan makes a dipping sauce with a raw egg, and it is pretty tasty. Or maybe you’re asking about some kind of disease you might catch?

And don’t forget Hulk Hogan, who back in the 80s used to prepare his special shakes – replete with raw eggs – and down them for all his little Hulkamaniacs right on WWF.

Oops, forgot the relevent part of my post! I think the OP is asking about the odds of coming down with salmonella, or some other bug?

You can try to figure out your odds from reading this http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~mow/chap1.html

I would say that unless you REALLY need to eat a raw egg, I would pass on it. Salmonella poisoning is pretty nasty, although it likely won’t kill you unless you have a compromised immune system.

according to the USDA your chances are thusly:
The baseline model for shell eggs presented in this report simulates an average production of 46.8 billion shell eggs per year in the U.S., 2.3 million of which contain Salmonella Enteritidis. The consumption of these eggs results in a mean of 661,633 human illnesses per year ranging from 126,374 to 1.7 million cases per year (5th and 95th percentiles) as shown in Table 3. It is estimated that about 94% of these cases recover without medical care, 5% visit a physician, an additional 0.5% are hospitalized, and 0.05% of the cases result in death.

Wrestlers (competitive type, not TV) drink raw eggs all the time. It gives them energy and doesn’t put on weight which they are always very concerned about.

I thought hazing was not allowed, but by any chance is this why you are asking? Ask them if you can swallow a goldfish, instead.

I’ve been eating raw eggs for almost 20 years, and never picked up salmonella, but you rolls the dice and you takes your chances. I also eat a lot of raw beef and hamburger and never got E Coli.

I’ve had raw eggs on my uni. Tasty, but very unusual.

You definitely don’t want to eat raw poultry. I remember a case I handled where an unfortunate fellow ate undercooked chicken, got sick and died of dehydration on an airplane. He had a preexisting heart condition he did not know about.

I’ve also had food poisoning, and trust me, this is as bad as it gets. There is nothing as awful as having all your strength and throwing up repeatedly. I threw my back out it was so bad. I got to the hospital for an IV.

The biggest danger with food poisoning is dehydration. You lose liquid so fast you aren’t aware of it. And of course you cannot keep anything down. Get thee to an ER is my recommendation.

The benefits of raw egg consumption reek of UL to me. but I didn’t find anything on snopes.
Does anyboby know the truth?

how do they make raw-egg-based desserts safe for consumption, then? e.g chocolate mousse has raw egg whites in it…tiramisu has raw egg yolks and raw, whipped egg whites folded into the marscapone…when i make these dishes, i don’t take any special precautions. if they are sold in the supermarket or at a restaurant, is there any special procedure they have to follow to make sure it’s ok?
(i’ve never been particularly worried about contracting salmonella myself.)

FDA on egg safety.

Also, you can purchase pasteurized eggs which are safe to eat raw. Foods you buy that are made with raw eggs (like mayo) are made with pasteurized eggs.

Safer. Safer.

I believe you’re thinking of Cool Hand Luke, but Mr. Newman eats pickled/hard boiled eggs in that.

To the OP, I can’t imagine a good reason to torture yourself with raw eggs like that. You can get better sources of protein and all the other eggy goodness elsewhere, without any risk of salmonella.

My mom makes a great chocolate mousse for holiday gatherings. She and I took to calling it “Death Mousse” after the raw egg scares started many years ago. That and because it’s so good it might kill you.

Have I added anything to this thread other than length? Probably not. I’ll go now.

I toured with a company doing “Barefoot in the Park” back in the late 1960s and the leading lady was called upon to down a raw egg during every performance.

She never got sick during a just under four-month run. Probably consumed around 90 eggs or so. I believe she now does voices for commercials, I’m not entirely sure about that but I am pretty sure she is still alive. I get a Christmas card from her every December or so.

TV

A guy I used to play rugby with ate six raw eggs for breakfast every morning. He’d crack them in a glass and slurp them down in the car like the rest of us drank coffee. He had a variety of psychological problems, but I think the fact that he was nuts led to eating eggs, not the other way around.

Anecdotal evidence alert…

I had a day or two of throwing up when I was an exchange student in Japan, and my host mum fed me rice with soya and raw egg mixed through it. This was to settle my stomach.

I still make this concotion to use up left-over rice, and enjoy it immensely. The rest of my family, however, have told me that if I insist on eating raw egg, I have to do it in a different room. Anyway, as regards the OP, it has never made me sick… yet !
