What’s the point of Omega 3 eggs - how are they supposed to help the heart? And why are they pricier? in our local grocery store, they average $4 higher than the regular grocery store run of the mill eggs.
Omega Eggs are high in beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids and contain less saturated fat than conventional eggs. AFAIK, it comes from their feed.
Yeah, what Kadaji said, the chickens are fed a diet high in Omega 3 fatty acids by supplementing their diet with ground flaxseeds. It would be a lot cheaper to eat regular eggs and eat a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds, but to each their own. I assume the extra cost is due to the low volume of Omega 3 enriched eggs sold, and the specialty nature of the product. If they get more popular competition should drive the price down.
Omega-3 fatty acids are the latest food fad - so the price will in part be a cynical attempt to exploit that. They are actually quite important to health, especially in growing children, and they’re not something the human body can naturally synthesise, so there is a need for them in the diet.
They’re turning up as fortified ingredients in all manner of products here - bread, yoghurts, milk…
Pfft, just eat a tuna fish sandwich every once in a while or a nice salmon meal and you’ll be fine with the cheapo eggs.
Thanks for the replies, everyone.
Mrs. Piper wants to know what omega 3 fatty acids are, and why they’re good for you?
They seem to contribute to total coronary health (benefit heart and arteries, lower cholesterol, etc)and immune system health.
