What are the best popular songs with lyrics written by guitar gods/virtuosos?

Yeah, well she’s Canuckian, and they do all kinds of crazy things up there! Some of 'em don’t even like to speak English!!!

Paul Green, the guy who founded the School of Rock (and the model for Jack Black’s character in the movie) said, of one of his female students “She’s going to be a success. But is she going to succeed as Sheryl Crowe, or as Joni Mitchell? …who can really fucking play guitar.” This is not someone who bestows praise easily.

Belew is a definite guitar god, but he also wrote the hit pop tune “Oh Daddy”. By the way, the other two thirds of the Adrian Belew Power Trio are two of Paul Green’s students that Belew met when he taught a workshop at the School of Rock.

Took 23 posts. Pity.

I immediately thought of Adrian Belew… for anyone familiar with his work with King Crimson or David Bowie, check out his solo work… You can listed to brief samples of his tracks from Salad Days which is sort of a “greatest hits”

I would put Glen Campbell up there.

He was a very important session man, a lot of his work was never credited.

He released a couple of instrumental albums.

Although his big hits were written by others, his contribution was usually critical in adding licks, fills and riffs - so such an extent that they turned competent enough songs into huge hits

Why a pity? His legend is huge.

An interesting twist on this thread is the word “virtuoso” - how does that word apply? Steve Cropper is a great example - the dude’s essential and better than most out there, but I would never use that word with him. I think he’d find it offensive - Cropper’s efficient like a ninja. Now, someone like Chet Atkins, who forgot more about the guitar than 90% of the players listed have learned - he’s a virtuoso; not humble at all and deservedly so. He puts some flaunt in his playing.

Some players are gunslingers and others are knife fighters.
