What are the consequences of a Felony

I have not lived in the U.S. for 30 yrs and I am thinking about Martha S. & felony convictions. It used to be that you lost your passport (altho I see convicted felons travelling now), could not vote nor hold elected office, and I thought there was something about owning property. What is the current situation?

Short answer:
Varies by state
Varies by country

Long answer will likely be given by others.

Not that it changes her lifestyle, but now Martha can’t tuck a Glock .40 into her purse.

In my state, you can still hold office, but you cant vote.

You cant own a gun, or even a single bullet - the rest of your life, and your wife cant either if she is in the same house with you (since you could have access to her gun).

YOu cant get a (decent) job anywhere, at any major company.

You cant go to canada, and if somebody else drives you there, they will lose their car at the border.

Most people around here are not cross checked on whether they have passports(probably because most felons dont have passports anyways), so unless it came up at your trial for some reason, you would still have it, but I dont know if you could renew it as a felon. When passports are taken away, is before trial if they think you might take flight.

If you were a nurse or doctor or pharmacist, you would lose your license - at least temporarily. YOu cant get a liqour license. If you were a teacher, you would be suspended from teaching indefinitely.

A long time ago, the army would not accept you if you were a felon, but I dont know about now though.

Basically, it seems that once you have a felony on your record, the only way to have status, own a gun, and to make good money again is to return to a life of crime.

As others have noted, it depends on where you are. In Wisconsin, it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of criminal record, except to the extent that your conviction may have an impact on your ability to do a particular job (e.g. it is not discrimination to refuse to hire a bank robber as a bank teller or a child molestor at a day care center).
