In Australia: The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald
Does the SMH have a significant readership outside of New South Wales? It’s certainly no national newpaper.
I’d add the Financial Review. It’s a business rag, sure, but it’s read nationwide.
For South Korea:
The most respected Korean-language paper is the Chosun Ilbo. They don’t offer an english-language paper version but they do a digital version: http://english.chosun.com/ Although, its important to note that the english-language articles often differ in content than the Korean language ones.
There are two english-language papers in South Korea, but they’re widely considered to be rags (by ex-pats who read them). They are the Korea Times and the Korea Herald.
You’re correct there. However, The Age is the Victorian equivalent of the SMH. National and international coverage in the two is the same. They differ in state coverage.
The papers in Australia break down like this:
Fairfax owned:
The Australian Financial Review (National)
The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW)
The Age (Vic)
Murdoch owned:
The Australian (National)
The Daily Telegraph (NSW)
Herald-Sun (Vic)
The Courier Mail (Qld)
The Advertiser (SA)
The Mercury (Tas)
Northern Territory News (NT)
Other
The West Australian (WA)
So there are two national newspapers, both of reasonably high quality. The coverage of the AFR is more narrow than any of the other Australian newspapers, however.
As far as state papers go, the Fairfax papers are very similar to each other, and the Murdoch papers are all fairly similar to each other. The Fairfax ones are in broadsheet format rather than tabloid, and the biases in the Fairfax papers are slightly different to those in the Murdoch papers, but they’re all of comparable quality.
The West Australian is still independent of Fairfax and Murdoch, but is still very similar to the other papers. It’s sort of a cross between The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald.
I suspect that’s true in most countries. It certainly is in the UK, where trashy rags like the Sun, the Mirror and the News of the World are the biggest sellers.
Ah, thanks. I guess that explains why their websites also have mirrored content.
Incidentally, News Ltd has a toehold in WA via ownership of the Sunday Times–a hideous tabloid that thankfully only blights each week but once.
Hereis a good start …
“Kind of” right wing? The National Post is, in Canadian terms, very right-wing, very similar to the tabloid Toronto Sun, but without the ‘beer, crime, sports & tits’ focus of the Sun. The National Post was only founded about five years ago, and it has been making a determined effort to become the national English-language “paper of record”. Since that niche is already occupied by the Globe and Mail, it’s been a tough slog, and of the four large English-language dailies in Toronto, it has the lowest readership.
We have two **main ** Broadsheets
and
Another one is
but it is a bit Regional, focusing on the Southwest of the country, and related issues.
We do get “Irish” edidtions of the main UK Tabloids, such as The Daily Mirror and The Sun, but they are re-hashed versions of the UK edidions, so you won’t get an “Irish” viewpoint.
There is one other Tabloid I should mention, in the interest of variation.
They claim to be Irish, but I suspect they get more than a little help from their UK counterpart.
Hope I helped.
I only just noticed the OP asked
What are the major newspapers for various large countries?
Somehow I don’t think Ireland qualifies as a large Country…
Sorry :smack:
