Question partially prompted by someone’s recent Facebook comments (mocking/satirical comments, I add) about identifying gender-wise as an attack helicopter and demanding to be addressed as “copter-self”:
AIUI, the proponents of the recent “There are more than 2 genders” viewpoint don’t actually give names to the extra genders (like the pronoun “male/female”), or recognize a specific number of existing genders, but rather, more or less allow an unlimited number of self-defined genders, and an accordingly unlimited number of names for them…is that correct?
Is there any school or workplace or club, etc., which actually put forth a specific number of recognized genders (i.e., 7 genders) and titled formal names for them? If so, what were the names?
Logistics-wise, are such folks satisfied with a covers-every-category 3rd “Other” restroom (or other facilities) specifically for the non-male/non-female folks? (It would be impractical to have 7, or 11, or 26 different restrooms for “7, or 11, or 26 different genders.”)
Here’s a list of 50 different options that Facebook will list as auto-complete options for gender (though you can manually put in absolutely anything at all). I’ve seen references that the list has since expanded to 71, but can’t find the list anywhere worth linking to.
Note that some of them are synonyms or otherwise redundant, and some are more specific than others.
My non-binary friends do not seem to be hung up on labels, and just want to use whichever restroom they feel most comfortable with. To avoid issues with restroom police they usually like to find facilities which have ‘family’ restrooms.
The only people I know “advocating” for a separate restroom for each gender identity are those who do not accept that the gender, genes and genitals of an individual do not always align to Western standards.
Not sure if the question fits GQ.
Nit: OP mentions 'like the pronoun “male/female” '. Male and female are not pronouns. Pronouns are a whole different question.
Actual data point: There was a recent (2-3 years ago) ruling by Indian Supreme Court recognising a “third gender”. Government websites, forms etc must list the third gender option along with male and female. (The ruling hasn’t been implemented in a lot of places though.)
