The rain is Tess, the fire Joe,
And they call the wind Maria

That Bloody, Bloody Wind.

Howzabout Ozzie & Harriet?
I’m reminded of a line from one of the Babylon 5 books talking about how original humans were when naming things.
(paraphrased, since I don’t have the book with me)
“They named their planet “Earth”. As in Dirt. They had one moon, which they cleverly named “Moon.””
Also, on the subject of ethnocentric names, it’s not at all strange that there would be a different official name for aforementioned heavenly bodies (“For heavenly body you put “Uma Thurman!””) depending on which language you were speaking. After all, how many different names are there for “The United States of America”? That’s bad enough just because each word in the name gets translated into the other languages, but then you have stuff like Germany, which has something like 50 different arbitrairily chosen names depending on who’s talking about them.
Also, if you play the Star Control games, one of the aliens you meet is from the Planet Earth. Not your Earth, but their own Earth. They translated the name of their planet, which is a word in their language for “Perfectly good soil” into the equivilant word in English.
That said, I’m all in favor of calling the Moon “Luna” so we can call people who later live on the Moon whenever we get around to putting bases and such on it “Loonies.” Also, Sol works as a name for the Sun in the sense that our system is thus called “The Solar System” as opposed to “The Sunny System”
I was under the impression that:
Sun:Sol. Ergo, we live in the Solar system.
Moon: Luna, as in “Luner Surface, Luner Lander, etc”
That’d be “Lunar Surface” and “Lunar Lander”.
Then there’s the “Veneric Lander”…
PS. I’d like to also chime in and say I back Chronos’ analysis of the use of Sol, Terra and Luna in SF.
I’d also just like to drop in that “Terra” is latin for “Dirt”
I prefer Ghia (Geo) for Earth. As in Geology: the study of Earth.
Sol, Luna and Ghia.
