At 4:28 in this video. What’s with the imposing castle-looking structure closest to the viewer? Is it a park structure, like a pavilion? And then further in the background, the twin-spired structure that looks like it inspired Ghostbusters? Is it a cathedral (I think I see crosses atop the spires)?
Belvedere Castle. The spires look like The Dakota, which is where Lennon was shot and Rosemary’s Baby was filmed.
Thanks! I got to learn about follies tonight. I knew they were a thing but didn’t know what they were called.
I was in NYC in the 80s when they were restoring Belvedere Castle (I see they’re doing it again now). They were selling tiny chunks of the Castle (flaked off during reconstruction, maybe?) as souvenirs. I still have mine.
Correct. It makes a nice backdrop for Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater.
It’s the San Remo, which is two blocks north of the Dakota. It’s another classic apartment building.
The actual Ghostbusters building is at55 Central Park West.
Thanks. The two really look nothing alike, do they?
They both have vaguely temple-like penthouses, as do several other apartment houses on Central Park West like the Beresford and the Ardsley.
Here’s a nice view of Belvedere Castle with the Dakota and the San Remo in the background.
It is commonly thought that the San Remo is the Dakota. San Remo is quite impressive with it’s spires. The Dakota, not so much. Both are very exclusive co-op apartment buildings. Good luck trying to get accepted by the Board in either one.
There’s even a musical called The Last 5 Years in which the wife mixes them up. Not that that means everything, but yes, I think it does happen often.
