What are these called (children's rifle with stock crank?)

I saw one of my college-age neighbors with one of these, that I seem to remember from my childhood, but I can’t find anything online that looks like it. My Google skills are, I guess, lacking.

It’s pretty small, a rifle-shaped thing suitable in size for a kid. Although my neighbor was just holding it, I seem to remember that you had to push down the stock and pull it back up to crank and set it up to fire. I don’t remember if it fired a projectile, or only caps. (I don’t think I actually had one, but I must have seen one and/or held it in my hands at some point).

Because my neighbor is a clueless idiot, I would like to be comforted that he won’t be able to do any actual damage with his little toy.

maybe a break-barrel air rifle?

Sounds like a pop gun I’ve seen but that would have looked very much like a toy. It could be a BB or pellet gun as shown by jz78817, I don’t have any clear memory of ever seeing one like that but somehow it feels like I have.

its a bb gun, I had one exactly as you describe as a kid.

erm didn’t think I hit the post button, went looking for pics of the pellets and the bbs (couldn’t actually find a pic:confused:) that I used in the one I had

Thanks for the responses. I searched again under “bb gun” and found this image, which seems to be the closest to what I remember seeing (I only saw it for about a second, as soon as he saw me, idiot neighbor went inside as if guilty of something) among all the bb gun images. It wasn’t nearly as realistic looking as jz78817’s link, and I don’t think it had a lever action either.

guestchaz, does this look like the one you had?

that’s exactly the one I had, actually. wow, the memories. those were a pretty good bb gun. I used mine for hunting quail for quite a few years. the forstock levers down and back up (hinged at the front) to charge it for shooting.

Our grandparents had a stock of pop guns and bb guns at their house. Without bb’s, we’d jam the end of the gun into the ground to “load” a hard mud pellet to shoot. Good times.

Yes, I’m sure those were good times, out in the country. My idiot neighbor, however, lives in a dense urban environment with zero lot line homes. What could he have been shooting at? My guess is cats.

The description sounds like a pneumatic rifle – think Daisy Red Ryder single-shot lever-action…watch A Christmas Story and you’ll get my point.

I also vaguely recall similar toys with open barrels (like a shotgun) that were plugged by a cork which was tied to the toy with a string or plastic line. That made it go “Pop!” but the cork wouldn’t travel to hit anyone.

Without an image or better description, it’s also possible you could be talking about an Airsoft gun, a regular paintball gun, or a modification of either.

Sorry to anti-comfort you, but eons ago my best friend and I were shot at by his neighbor who was using an air pellet gun. We called the cops and he argued that it wasn’t like he was using a real firearm. Sorry, they said, it’s still assault and they added it to his rap sheet.

Amazing guy, that one! :frowning:

Here’s a vintage Daisy Pop Gun. Not a BB gun, it popped corks with that lever action stock.

And here’s a funny related video I ran across on the way.
