What are these meerkat-like things?

From dailysquee.com, I found a picture of these creatures. At first I thought they were some kind of meerkat, but they have long arms that suggest a more primate type of body. I remember meerkats having shorter arms, but maybe I’m mistaken. What are they? Meerkatmonkeys?

Dwarf mongoose

(although, since there are several of them, perhaps it should be polygoose.)

Meerkats are also part of the mongoose family, so you are kind of right in picking them as “some kind of meerkat.”

Mongeese!

Reminds me of the zookeeper that decided to set up a mongoose exhibit. He started a letter to his supplier:

“Dear sir, please send me two mongooses…”

Although technically correct, it sounded wrong, so he tore it up and started over:

“Dear sir, please send me two mongeese…”

That also sounded wrong–and was, in fact, wrong–so he tore it up and started over:

“Dear sir, please send me one mongoose. And while you’re at it, please send me another one…”

I’m thinking a polygoose is a two-headed mongoose…

Very few jokes stick in my brain for more than a few days. I’ve had that one for 20+ years now…

Mongoose! Of course! I’ve seen them at the zoo, looking more like the ones in the Wikipedia link. I remember being disappointed that they didn’t look at all like the more otter-like rendering of Rikki Tikki Tavy in the animated movie. I didn’t realize meerkats and mongoose were related. Meerkats look so much prairie dogs, I thought they were from the same genus: varmint. Thanks for identifying the beasties for me.
