What are these things showing up on NH highways?

Basically, a large pole with 2 protruding things mounted near the top. Here’s a pic (sorry, not the greatest photo).

As you can see, the things at the top are 90 degree elbows for mounting something. Cameras, perhaps? That would make sense for the one pictured, since it is near a busy exit, but the one at the other side is positioned further away from the exit (and not sure the exit can even be seen from where it is mounted).

So, anyone have an idea what the thing is? I’ve been seeing them appear at different highway locations in NH.

No answer, but I noticed similar installations on a recent drive back from Canberra to Sydney. The poles are wooden and very tall, maybe twice the height of a normal power pole, and occurred either alone or in threes in a line angled across the direction of the highway.

On the very top of the pole is a thin metal disk of a diameter larger than the pole (I assume to stop rain getting into the wood’s end-grain). In this case there was a cross-bar in a similar position to the one you depict, but it was a straight bar with no dangly bits.

They seemed too tall for cameras to track vehicles from. I’ll be interested in answers.

They do look a bit like the camera mounting poles that you see on motorways in the UK.

Smile. They’re traffic cameras.

Live free and be spied.

Well if they’re anything like the UK ones, they’re too far away and don’t have the resolution to identify licence plate numbers. They’re used to monitor traffic flow/spot accidents etc.

There are different cameras to spy on you that are much closer to the traffic, such as the eeeeeevil “average speed” ones. Bastards.
