I’ve always thought that Christmas should be a time of giving rather than a time of getting, so what are you going to give for Christmas?
My eldest son wants the game “Don’t Wake Daddy” which I’m going to get for him because I don’t consider it so much of a game as important social skills education.
I bought my infant nephew the soundtrack from Amadeus. He likes music, and it’s said that classical music helps kids to learn math.
I may get my friend in Hoquiam, WA a nice sweater. She liked the East German peacoat I gave her for her birthday Friday (she said it was “really cool”).
I don’t know what to get for my sister and brother-in-law. I’ll have to think about that.
Mom? Hm. She doesn’t “need” anything. I’ll have to think about that one too.
Best bud will probably get a video, preferably a nice obscure Italian horror film.
What do I want for Christmas? A job in Washington state, a home in Washington state, and a girlfriend. Or a Schweizer 300 (or Hughes 269 – same thing) helicopter to fly around in! Anyone want to give me $100,000 or so, so I can buy one? Maybe take up a collection from all of the Dopers? I’ve been good this year!
I’m giving my truck, my fuel, and 5-6 hours of my time to a local organization that provides and delivers Christmas gift packages to less fortunate inner-city families on Christmas Eve.
A hug to my favorite Rhode Islander, Euty! Glad to see you back, but does this mean I have to share our state’s one internet connection with you again?
We do a secret Santa drawing in my family, and I drew my mom. I love my mother dearly, but she is the last person you want to buy a gift for. She always acts perfectly happy with whatever she has and never hints at wanting anything for her birthday or Christmas. My standard Mother’s Day gift to her is coming to the house and cleaning the gutters, the house, mowing the lawn, etc and giving her a day off. I can’t do this for every occasion of course, so I’m getting desparate.
My GF gota diamond ring from me not too long ago, but I guess that doesn’t count for Christmas, huh?
We drew names for the adults this year, I have my step brother. On his list was some stuff you can’t really get in winter (leather sandals size 8) Impossible to get and very expensive Colorado Avalanche tickets so I settled on a watch. I found one I think he will like but need to get a check from my client and rent is coming up.
Niece #1 is getting the cutest jewelry box that she should be able to use through her teens (she’s five).
Neice #2 is nine years old…hard age to buy for. I thought I might get her one of those jewelry kits for making bracelets and the like.
Nephew #1 is three, he’s getting a footbridge for his Brio train set.
Nephew #2 will only be 10 months old for this Christmas so I gather that what ever I get will be fine.
My family is getting a set of dishes. I painted them for each person with stuff they like. Though I’m probably going to break down and buy some more stuff for my sisters.
Le Sang is getting a something or other, but I’m now silly enough to post it.
I still need to find presents for Mike, my aunt Julie, and my cousin Jessie. I’m pretty clueless at the moment.
I haven’t planned my shopping yet (not quite sure who’s on the good list this year, still working things out), but I know one thing I’m giving. I finally have my medical release! I can’t wait.
Blood!
Seriously, this is something I used to do every couple of weeks or so. Whole blood every two months, and apharesis every other week (platlets for chemo patients and burn victims). And the people at the blood bank are really happy to see me back. They like me: I’m a fast donor - whole blood donorbag filled in 3 minutes, 15 seconds! Wohoo!.
At least I’ll have 2 hours during apharesis to sit quietly (HA! Me? Sit quietly?) and plan my shopping. (Probably like FairyChatMom said, gift certificates - the real ‘one size fits all’.)
I think thats awesome Smugly. I usually deliver for Santa’s Anonymous the week before Christmas. Its a wonderful feeling when you see those little eyes light up when you go to their door.
“The spirit of Christmas is ruined for me.
I guess that only leaves the other 364
days of giving in the year.”
I firmly believe that if the spirit of generosity is absent for most of the year, pretending that it has suddenly appeared for a single holiday won’t change much inside of you. Which, of couse, is part of what giving is all about. Changing the world through giving of yourself is the surest path towards the transformation of your own soul.
Most of all, I wanted to welcome back Eutychus and ask him to drop by this thread.
No one has forgotten you just yet my friend.
Warmest Holiday wishes to all of the wonderful people at these boards. Joining this group has already begun to change my life and I look forward to more of the same. May each one of you be blessed with joy in the seasons to come.
I’m giving handmade stuff this year. Crocheted potholders & dishcloths, and plastic canvas refrigerator magnets. Perhaps that sounds cheesy, but hey, my family is a family of families, and I know darn well I’ll be making stuff they will actually like and use. Besides, we’ve already agreed amongst ourselves to do the handmade gift thing this year. My sister-in-law, who is not crafty, thought it was a great idea, but wasn’t quite sure what to do. A few days later, I was talking to my brother on the phone, and while we were discussing what to get for the kids, he mentioned that sis-in-law likes to bake, I said “Hey! Have her get some decorative tins, and whip us up some cookies or fudge or something as a gift!” He ran that by her, and that’s what she’s doing. She’s been in the family long enough to know that we will snarfle baked goods at lightning speed.
As for my kids, I’m getting my oldest daughter (she’s 12) some Calvin & Hobbes books. Her adoptive mother told me that’s what she wanted. I’m quite happy to oblige her there! I haven’t a clue as to what I’m going to get my other two, age 3 & 1. I may just buy some cool stuff for the three-year-old and let the one-year-old play with the boxes.
So far, I’ve ordered Plan B by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller for one sister and So You Want to be a Wizard by Diane Duane for my nephew.
I want to get my nephew magic equipment, which is one of few things on his list that I know was put there by him and not his mother (if I can find any). Other than that, I have no clue.
