What are your biggest specific SDMB annoyances?

DTMFA

Google is your…ah, nevermind.
mmm

I’m amused by ‘Cryptic/obscure abbreviations or acronyms’ followed closely by ‘DTMFA’ (huh?).

My other - I should have posted in the other thread:

'It’s too bad that you did/didn’t say/do/mean/intend a really horrible thing

**… oh wait … **

you did/didn’t say/do/mean/intend that. ’

Some unwitting person posts for advice and basically gets the metaphorical shit kicked out of him.

Then when he complains that he’s going through a hard time and his feelings are hurt, the response is basically, ‘‘Oh, well. That’s the risk you take when you post here.’’

Just because people have the freedom to say what they want to people doesn’t mean they should, or that people behaving badly should be defended or their behavior rationalized. You can make your point without attacking another human being. And if you choose not to do that, it’s on you, not the person you hurt.

What the hell are stick and slipper jokes?

Newbie ankle nipping by the house mutt; there’s always a couple in every crowd/forum. It applies to all discussion sites. It’s apparently very human response (initiation rituals, etc) to harass new comers trying to join the group but gets so old.

Posters who go out of their way to do something that the forum software takes care of for them:

There’s one poster who, instead of using the handy “quote” button on a post will instead:

>go out of his way to copypasta
>the post and add the “greater than” sign
>when he’s responding to it

I know it’s a habit from older boards that don’t have the software, but stop it! There’s a quote function!

Also, there’s another poster who goes out of their way to add a colour tag to their hyperlinks. WHY? The board software automatically parses hyperlinks and colours them. There’s no need to add a pretty blue tag.

I was going to put ‘this’, but I’ve got a feeling that that (this?) would be another hated meme.

There are times for spleen venting, but the above is when empathy is by far the better course. But, as in real life, some people just are nasty, or just don’t realise that they are being nasty.

Oh yeah, this is what I was going to say. Closely related and equally as annoying is the person who ignores the actual question to condescendingly ask “Why would I waste my time with that?”

“Can you pick out Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star on a keyboard?”

“Why would I waste my time doing that?”

I completely agree with your example, but I still think the meaning of “threadshitting” is subjective. Many threadshitters don’t think they are doing it.

Stick and slipper jokes (plus a bonus boomerang joke):

mmm

So far the “winner” is “Links with no description provided,” which is also one of my choices. Followed closely by “Quoting entire long post” and “Responding w/o reading.”

Only 2 people don’t like “So…” so…I guess we can ignore them. :insert grin smilie, which pisses some people off but I will continue to use in lieu of facial cues:

It’s about that time, isn’t it? But thanks for the lead-in to my favorite annoyance, and that is…

People who come into threads to register their annoyance that such a thread even exists. Since it takes separate actions to a) click on a thread to open it, b) type your response to it, and c) hit submit, that demonstrates an awful lot of effort for something that you don’t care about.

I have the solution, though, in one step. Ready?

  1. Don’t read it.

That was easy, wasn’t it?

It seems that way, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, my old friend, there is a rather large contingent of people here on the Dope…on the internet…on earth… who find their greatest entertainment, interest, meaning, distraction, what have you, in discovering new reasons and ways to be annoyed, irritated, disgusted, revolted, outraged, pissed off, and generally ornery, and a fairly large percentage of them take the greatest pleasure of all in expressing it.

So there’s that.

This is a big enough thing around here that it gets mentioned on a list of biggest SDMB annoyances? Am I just hanging out in the wrong threads or what?

No one is accidentally nasty. Insensitive, sure. Nasty, no. Nasty is deliberate.

Seconded!

Why? If you don’t like reading long posts, then don’t read them, don’t try to shame/bug/demand that the poster shorten their posts for you.

If the long posts are so long and eye-glazy that no one responds, that will speak for itself and the poster will learn, but so long as someone takes an interest, there’s really no call for anyone to say this unless and until the verbose poster puts up a post saying “Hey, no one ever reads or responds to my posts, what am I doing wrong?”

Who does this? Or rather…how? B&B as in physically, or B&B in some alternate Doper universe?

Ahem. I hear ya.

I thought “woo” meant either belief in imaginary effects or imaginary explanations for real effects. Either way, it’s ignorance, which we’re all against, right?

Now, granted there will sometimes be disagreement over whether something is woo or not, but the term still seems useful as a shorthand for describing the poster’s attitude on that particular point.

So are the objections to “woo” on conceptual grounds (that is, I suppose, a disagreement with my first part above), or on the grounds that it’s a derisive, not-nice way of saying that?

Except that not all of us can get to Urban Dictionary at work.

It means Dump The Mother Fucker Already.

I picked the +1, there’s no reason for that with nothing added. I also picked, which most everyone seemed to, just a link. Especially in the pit, I mean come on tell us why you’re pissed off.

Could kick myself for not nominating the overabundance of threads and posts about libertarianism.

Oh, alright. From now on I’ll call them “medicine” and “science”.
