Everyone else would say it with your wife’s pronunciation, unfortunately for you; you’d be the weird Dad who says his daughter’s name funny.
Hubby and I just decided to stop all BC, so names of potential future kidlets are on our minds.
I love male Irish names. Like Jettboy I would totally love a son named Finn. I like Eamonn as well, and Lugh. But I think these might be a bit out there for my husband, so maybe Gabriel or Ian.
For girls we are totally decided that our first daughter will be named after our mothers. My mom is Mary Dorothy and his mom is Gail, so Dorothy Gail will be our first daugher. He likes Dot as a nickname and I like Dor, so she may have several names to choose from.
If we were to have another girl, maybe Miriam after my mother and grandmother.
Our niece was born a year ago and SIL chose Emelia Beatrix. It’s such a gorgeous name!
And if you’re in Kansas, she can be Dororthy Gail from Kansas!
I always thought that was spelled ‘Emiline’. I went to university with an Emiline Smith and I thought that was a cool name.
Well we don’t get tornadoes here in MA, but as a Lit/Writing major the name is right up my alley! My husband didn’t know the character was Dorothy Gale until I told him, and that made him love the chosen name even more.
If only all my kids were named after classic book characters.
This is what I thought, too. If I were to make up a non-standard baby name, it’d probably Secretia or Excretia for a girl and Sir PoopsALot for a boy (Poops being the nickname, of course).
Sunspace and Glory, the more I think the about the name Emmaline, the more I like it. It’s quickly moving up the list to the top. All I have to do now is get pregnant again. Oh, and have a girl. I can’t think of a better reason to have a baby (actually, we’re seriously considering having another, but not because of the cool names).
I like the name Dorothy, too (nickname would be Dor) but I think our first daughter (if we have one) is going to be Margaret Rose (nn Meg, after A Wrinkle in Time). Another literary name!
DISCLAIMER: Mrs. Homie and I are unable to have kids, and have decided not to adopt, so it’s never actually going to come up.
If we’d had a boy, we had agreed on Benjamin Elias. Benjamin because I like Biblcal names that are not too common (Matthew, John) or too obscure (Methuselah, Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz), and I think Benjamin fits the criteria. Elias because one of the people I admire (though he had his flaws) is Walter Elias Disney. We would have called the boy Eli.
If we’d had a girl, we had agreed on Grace Louise. Grace because - well, it’s too close to “witnessing” to explain here, but you get the idea. Louise because it’s my mother’s middle name.
I’d probably have to do like my paternal grandmother did, and give all the kids two middle names, just to fit in all the names I want.
Not sure how I’d do all the mixing and matching, and if I’d had kids it would depend on how many boys or girls.
Amongst the girl names I’d have Sharon, for my mother, Esther, for my maternal grandmother, Judith, for the heroine from the Apocrypha, and ditto for Susanna. Ruth for a favorite aunt, and Sophia, for my paternal grandmother.
For boys there would be Walter, for a teacher I admired. Thomas, for several folks. Given our current culture no boy would probably want Desmond(SA archbishop) but it could be a middle name. I’d want John Steven, in that order, for a Tanzanian athlete from the 1968 Olympics. Harold for my father.
Girl: I’ve recently discovered Alithea from Behn’s The Country Wife, and I love it, love it, love it. I also like Eleanor. I’ve considered Elyanna or Elianna, but I like it less now for that purpose. It’s too much my second name. I like names beginning with “el.” Also Rose, maybe.
Boy: Boys are less fun to name. Liam, Patrick Leon. Theodore, Matthias, Merric.
If I were to have any more children, which seems rather unlikely, I would name a boy either Edward Joseph (for my maternal grandfather) and call him E.J. or perhaps Gunnar becuase it is a fun name. I don’t want to say the girl’s name, as it is highly unusual and I am hoping that perhaps one day in the not so near future, I might have a graddaughter with that name.
I did threaten to name my daughter “Morweanna” when my mother kept complaining about my naming my existing daughter “Kendall” because she might get picked on for her name…
We have three boys, all of whom we gave pretty traditional first names. If we’d had any girls, we were leaning towards Eleanor or Emma (although Emma has become so freakin’ trendy in recent years we’d probably now avoid it). I also like the name Elizabeth, having known several nice Elizabeths over the years, but we have a niece named that and would probably not use it ourselves just to avoid confusion.
We used “Frodo” as a placeholder name before each of our boys was born and actually named.
I work with someone called Octavia and forgot how much I like the name, so add that to my girls. I quite like the idea of a boy called Octavian too.
Not planning on any kids… I’m pretty sure I’d be trying to talk The Boy out of naming our first child Sega Genesis if it ever happened, though.
Back when I was trying to figure out whether or not I wanted kids, I did have a few options lined up for my hypothetical spawn:
Boys: Alexander, Gabriel, Felix, Benjamin
Girls: Olivia, Amelie, Grace, Alice
(can you tell I like old-fashioned names?)
Of course, the danger of having a large extended family is that your older cousins go and use up all the good names (especially if they’re French-Canadian and double up on the names because they’re greedy like that)… sadly, Felix, Gabriel and Amelie have all been snapped up in recent years.
But I’d really suggest not spelling it ‘Emmaline’, because if you do, people will keep thinking that it’s two names, and Line is her middle name.
We have two boys and plan on having one more child … maybe two. We have Spencer Philip and Colin Matthew right now. I’m really hoping we have a girl becaue we can’t come up with any more boy names that “go” with Spencer and Colin!
I love the names Oliver and Maxwell, but my husband has nixed those. The names we didn’t use were Kyle and Benjamin.
For girls, we’ve got bunches - Charlotte, Victoria, Bethany, Rebecca, Carolyn, Amelia, Fiona, Ainsley … I could go on! The only requirement is that the name flow with Ellen for a middle name (it’s a family thing). I would love to use Ellen as a first name, but I won’t give a child of mine the initials EZ.
Right now my favorites are Silas Timothy for a boy and Juliet Annemarie for a girl. I also like Micah or Holden for boys’ names and Jane and Simone for girls.
Our second boy would have been Ryan Patrick, but he turned out to be Amy Renee instead. She would rather be Elizabeth.
I’m really turning toward some of the old-fashioned names, but I won’t be naming any more babies. I’ll have to whisper in kids’ ears about my grandchildren, I guess.
It amuses me to see my own name coming back into popularity a bit as one of those old-fashioned names. The timing is about right. I’m about twenty years younger than most of those who have it.
My girl names are Elanor Roísín and Amerens Ida, boy names are Edward Stone and Joffrey Layne. I also like Jasper for a boy and Grey as a girl’s middle name.
My SO’s family is one that passes down middle names, and theirs for boys is Allen. After watching TV one night, I jokingly suggested that if we have a son, we should name him Ethan Allen, after the furniture store. Big mistake: he was amused and liked the name and how it all flowed together and now is set on giving this name to our son, who is completely hypothetical at this point.
Last night he joked that if we have twins, we’ll call them BJ and RJ, Blow Job and Rim Job…
I would like to give my kids Japanese middle names, as I don’t have one but wish I did. I’m entertaining giving them my parents’ Japanese middle names, but it’s not something I’ve really thought through or discussed with my SO.
