What are your favorite issues of Playboy magazine?

The cover of the November 1975 Sex In Cinema issue was amazing, and about as risque as a Playboy cover ever got. An attractive blonde woman in a transparent top is seated in a luxurious private theater seat holding a cup of popcorn, and her fingers are just under the elastic of her panties. I’ve spoilered the link:

Another classic movie based pictorial was for The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea with Kris Kristofferson and Sara Miles. They were, like the couple in Boxcar Bertha, a real item, and the pictorial was pretty steamy.

If you or anyone else wants to read an old issue, the Playboy website has an archive of every magazine published, and I believe you can subscribe month to month for like ten bucks a month, which should allow time to copy all the articles and interviews you want. I’ve never tried it, so I can’t personally vouch for the quality, but the reviews are good.

The archived issues include everything, including the ads, and I think those might be the most interesting things to read. I remember sneaking my dad’s playboys in the 60’s, and ads for luxury items like a watch that was accurate to a minute a month, or hi-fi sets with FOUR speakers.

ETA: and by far the playmate that sticks in my mind is Cynthia Myers, who defied gravity.

I started reading it regularly in 1979, the year I turned 18. The covers of my favorite issues featured Barbara Carrera, Bernadette Peters (not even nude, but a big early crush of mine) and Kim Basinger.

PLAYBOY is one of those things that hit its heyday well before I became aware of it–like Marvel Comics and WHFS FM–but even a bad issue of PLAYBOY is an issue of PLAYBOY. Except for the nudity free issues from last year.

I was a subscriber for a while and the access to back issues was a blessing. But when I tried to cancel the subscription, I was quickly reminded of Hefner’s sleazy mob connections. Honestly, I’d rather just buy the book and CD about Playboy’s first 45 years. I don’t want an ongoing, hard-to-cancel entanglement with the criminals who handle their subscription services.

Phrasing!

I remember the one with a couple of centaurs peeking through bushes at a maiden bathing in a pond while a mare is drinking from it. The one is saying to the other, “Well, come on, come on! Make up your mind!”

And speaking of buying it for the articles, there were braille editions of the magazine available at least in the early eighties when I saw a couple. They had no RLDs (Raised Line Drawings) so you sort of had to read them. Your favorite… parts would be soon worn out anyway.

I don’t remember the month and year, and I’m in the office so I’m not going to look it up. But I think it was around January, 1994. It had nude photos of Denise Crosby in it. It’s my favourite because that was also the time when ‘sportbikes’ started to become popular, and they had an article showing photos of various makes. Fortunately, the models did not obscure them very much.

The obit didn’t say his cartoons were good.

Oh, Lord! Do I remember this issue!

The issue with Rita Lee (November, 1977), now labeled as “vintage” on eBay.

Any issue with an article written by Craig Vetter, who did wacky adventure stuff and also interviewed Hunter S Thompson.

The John Lennon interview some of you have referenced was fucking fantastic. My main memory is of the interviewer getting him to go song by song and talk about who contributed what to Beatles’ songs.

The issues from October 1987, April 1989, June 1989, October 1989 and April 1990 will always hold a special place in my heart. As a teenager who was still too young to actually purchase the magazine, I surreptitiously relocated those five from my aunt and uncle’s place to a safe spot under my bed after going over for a visit. I can still recall the stinging disappointment I felt when, the next time we went over there, I discovered that all the magazines had been tossed. I was so bummed I actually went downstairs and interacted with my family for once.

Was it a playboy cartoon that had a businessman smoking a joint while the hippie on the next balcony sipped a martini or was that a New Yorker?

Honestly, when I was a kid, the interview with Bob Villa about his work on “This Old House” was just an amazing article. My father was flabbergasted when I asked to borrow the issue, JUST read the article about Villa in front of him, and then gave it back.

Well, duh. They wanted to be able to use the bathroom.

Never mind the articles. I bought Playboy for the naked ladies!

I’ve still got several old Playboy mags in a box somewhere. These would be from 20+ years ago:

The Playboy 40th Anniversary Issue - includes a retrospective of playmate photos from the beginning of the magazine up to the date of publication.

The issue with 40-year-old Bo Derek. God damn she was gorgeous!

Also liked some of the College Girls issues. I particularly remember a “Girls of the SEC” issue. Great stuff.

November 85 - The Women of Mensa

Sheri Blair - the caption said she had a thing for red balloons, but when they tried to use them in the shoot, they popped. They used a bunch of red balls as a stand in. They later said if you want one of the red balls, ask us.

I was a subscriber from mid 70’s to mid 80’s. I threw out any Playboys I had 15 years or so ago. I didn’t think they were worth anything.

I remember a coupla photos from back in the late 60’s/early 70’s, including the fore mentioned Cynthia Myers, but to be honest, I wasn’t really interested in the models names at the time.

I still have the red ball, and the nice note that came with it.

I recall interviews with Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Bob Dylan, etc. that were works of art in themselves.

As a kid who only knew Ron Embleton’s art from the British kids’ SF strip Trigan Empire, I still remember the deep cognitive dissonance I felt when I first saw his Playboy strips. Also I want 1800 quid to buy that page.

The ones with the nekkid chicks.

In one of the Anniversary issues, I was struck by something.
Look at photos of Ursula Andress, from the time when she was married to John Derek.
Look at photos of Linda Evans, from the time when she was married to John Derek.
Look at photos of Bo Derek, from the time when she was married to John Derek.
He married the same woman three times!
