What are your favorite moments in musical theatre?

Most romantic:
“Shall We Dance” from The King and I, when the king says “We do it again.”

Most Chilling
The final line in “If You Could See Her With My Eyes (The Gorilla Song)” in Cabaret. Extremely scary, because you’re seduced into thinking like a Nazi.

I love the “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” number from Kiss Me, Kate.

Wow, quite a few…

Les Mis
The entire barricade scene. Brilliantly staged and unforgettable.

Gypsy
Rose’s entrance, and “Rose’s Turn”

RENT
“Christmas Bells”… I’ve seen the show eleven times, and pick a different character to follow each time.

and Wicked
“…nobody in all of Oz, no Wizard that there is or was is ever gonna bring me down…”

More:

Into the Woods, the Witch’s heartrending sobs during “Children Won’t Listen,” as she sings “From someone you love… to someone you lose…”

Whistle Down The Wind, as Swallow departs the house to sing the title song the first time.

Gigi and the whole staging of “The Night They Invented Champagne.”

Carousel: Billy’s “Soliloquy.”

The Bells of St. Sebastians number from Nine. I’m a total sucker for a good kyrie elaison.

I agree with whoever said “virtually all of 1776”, but particularly “Yours Yours Yours” and “He Plays the Violin”- both of them very intelligently erotic numbers.

oh yes glad somebody mentioned “Wicked”…“defying gravity” always gives me goosebumps

One Day More from Les Mis sends chills up my spine and gives me goosebumps…and just about all of Les Mis.

But Master of the House, man, it just doesn’t get any better than that, especially when the whole theater winds up clapping and cheering along. I think those two got the biggest applause during the show we went to.

My two favorite Les Mis moments are both deaths: Eponine’s and Gavroche’sThere are some chills for ya. Particularly when [spoiler]They pull eponine’s body away, and Marius reaches for her, but is pulled back by his friends.** Don’t know if they always do that bit, but I just noticed it the last time I saw the show.

I’m not a Rent fan really much at all, but I always found it gleefully ironic that Roger’s song about how he can’t write a song is way better than the sappy song he eventually comes up with.

Some of you already hit some good Into the woods ones, but my favorite is the song No More. I love the show, but it’s metaphor for life as a fairy tale can get a bit strained at times. Not during No More. That’s where it shines. Beautiful.

sigh… spoiler boxes aren’t really worth the effort when you screw up the coding, are they? Oh well… I guess most people who haven’t seen, read, or heard the story of Les Miserables won’t be reading this thread anyway…

Wow, folks. I guess I’m alone in this one.

The bottle dance in Fiddler on the Roof.

Amazing, amazing, amazing bit of choreography.

I love Les Mis and I realize the limitations of the stage, but that part of Javert’s Suicide when he’s wirthing around in the light…it struck me as more silly then it should have been.

I can imagine rehearserals.

Javert: So you want me to jump off the bridge and writh around on the floor and pretend I’m drowning? Right…

The part in Miss Saigon where Ellen sings -
“it’s alright now
I’m with you
We’ll get through this
We’ll pull though
All I want in my life
Is you”
I get shivers every time I hear it.

In Evita where Peron says -
“I’m trying to point out that you are dying”

The entire song “Lily’s Eyes” from The Secret Garden

And basically all of the touring version of Jesus Christ Superstar that came through Calgary last summer. It’s not my favorite (though I know every word) and I got the tickets cause they came as part of a package with Miss Saigon. It was the most fantastic show I had ever seen. The production was beyond amazing. You could practically feel the sparks between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and every interaction Jesus and Judas had was breathtaking. During the Gethsemane scene Judas breaks away from the crowd and he and Jesus embrace - the power in that one moment!

UC Riverside did a production of The Rocky Horror Show earier this season. They did an amazing job, but the floor show, specifically, made my jaw drop.

I’ll second Brush Up Your Shakespeare and “I’m only Aldonza, the whore,” from Man of La Mancha.

The Rum-tum-tugger (sp?) is a curious cat …
From ALW’s Cats. Though these days does the Cats musical count as furry porn?

Les Miz: “Let others rise to take our place until the earth is free!” I could listen to Anthony Warlow sing that line all day.

In “One Day More” when they start waving the huge red flag.

Depends on the production and the actor playing Grantaire, but

after Enjolras dies, when Grantaire runs to the top of the barricade and gets shot. So much more powerful since I read the book.

The opening of Songs for a New World.

The climax of “Dangerous Game” from Jekyll & Hyde. That song is sex.

Also sex is in “Where’s the Girl” from The Scarlet Pimpernel, the last time Chauvelin sings “Come again” etc.
