This one. Thank you for posting it because I couldn’t remember the title. Very sad and very chilling.
Aren’t these books just romance novels for men?
::d&r::
Might’ve been me. The Girl Next Door and An American Crime were based on the murder of Sylvia Likens, a girl my mom (and extended family) knew. Her killing still resonates in Indianapolis to this day; a lot of people here knew either the Likens or the Baniszewskis (and I’ve had family members as students). Still can’t watch either film. The book has been released under the titles The Indiana Torture Slaying and House of Evil: The Indiana Torture Slaying; the book titles give away the horrific nature of the killing.
Answering the OP: Trying not to be a threadshitter, I’ve yet to read a true crime novel of something that hasn’t been of something that has actually impacted my life. To that extent, I’ve read the above (the Likens murder having been the subject of so many discussions amongst family and friends) and Cruel Sacrifice, about the torture/murder of Shanda Renee Sharer (daughter of a former coworker). Can’t objectively comment on their content, but both books hit me hard… probably because I know people in each. Haven’t read Little Lost Angel yet, which is also about the Sharer case, and still haven’t brought myself to read One Deadly Night, about the killing of David Camm’s wife and children (I was on the first jury of his three trials). So, in the end, I can’t recommend anything on literary or entertainment value alone, but offer up some titles that may be of the “holy crap. some guy I know online had to deal with this!” variety.
Overall, I think the bianchi/hillside strangler murders are the worst. Just the stories I’ve heard about the case make me not want to read it. I remember reading an article once about a detective who was describing the worst experiences of his career, and he said by far it was the tape that bianchi made of torturing one of the girls to death, her screams, and begging for her life. So it wasn’t even a detective on the case, it wasn’t at the time, but it was a recording made and heard decades afterwards that still shook the detective. I’ve never tried to locate that tape, and never want to.
The Sharer case details made me nauseated when I read them.
Bestial: The Savage Trail of a True American Monster by professor of literature Harold Schechter. He has a sting of cheery titles; Fatal, Fiend, Deviant, Deranged, Depraved, and, with David Everitt, The A to Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers.
Great writer.
I’m not a big fan of the true crime genre (though I did enjoy Helter Skelter); but as a fan of history, I have to say that Manhunt really stood out as excellent.
Death in the City of Light is about a serial killer in Occupied Paris [WW2]. The dude was getting people to pay him to sneak them out of France, taking the money and killing them. Talk about a hell of a scam!
Whitey Bulger by Kevin Cullen…Can’t reccomend the book ENOUGH…Even if you don’t like organized crime stories it is GOOD…but VERY distrubing…Whitey was a dead on creepy sociopath…Cullen covered the trial for the Boston Globe ,and he’s an excellent writer…

Subject: CASH INTO YOUR PAYPAL ACCOUNT WITH JUST A FEW CLICKS
IT REALLY WORKS-IT’S NOT A SCAM – YOU NEED $6 / TIME / A COMPUTER
!!!QUICK MONEY!!! – FAST CASH
At first I thought this was too good to be true, how wrong I was!! I decided to give it a go, it was only 6 dollars so why not? Well I was astounded!! Money has, and still is coming to my account.
Ok this is all you need:
- An email address
- A PayPal account
- then POST,POST,POST,POST,POST,POST,POST,POST,POST… …
Only hours after implementing this exact system I about fell out of my chair as money ACTUALLY started rolling in. I couldn’t believe it and for that reason, I became a believer in this system.?
WHAT IS IT?
The idea is that of a system that takes advantage of the power of compounding. And in a big way, let me tell you. First and foremost understand that there are countless spin-offs of this system that try to make a “quick buck” off of people. Long lists, the 5 & 10 dollar trees, the birthday systems, etc… Those spin-offs do make money because of the ease of implementation of this idea, but they do NOT use the compounding advantage. This system is THE legit and profitable one.
HERE IS HOW IT WORKS…
There is a list of 6 email addresses (you’ll see it as you read further). Each of these people has already taken part in this system.
When someone new comes along (such as yourself) he/she removes #1 off of the list, moves the other five email addresses up one position (i.e. #6 goes to #5, #5 to #4, etc.), and adds their PayPal email address in the 6 position.
This process is what develops the power of compounding.
The bottom line is this… Honesty and Integrity creates Profitability.
Following this EXACT process is what creates the money, and that is why this system has been raved about in the Altering the system creates weak results. The legality of this system comes from the idea that you are of course creating a mailing list, and a “service” is being provided (more on that later.) Now on to how your SpamSpamSpamSpamSpam creates BIG money…
INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1:
The first thing to do COPY, PASTE and SAVE this entire post in word or notepad on your computer so you can come back to it later.
After that, if you are not already a PayPal user you need to go to the PayPal website at https://www.paypal.com/ and SIGN UP.
To receive credit card payments from other people you must sign up for a PREMIER or BUSINESS account (not just a PERSONAL account). This is highly recommended to allow others easy payment options.
To place the initial $6 into your account, you will have to verify your bank account with PAYPAL (which may take a few days).
PAYPAL is 100% secure and is used by millions of people worldwide.
STEP 2:
Here is where the action occurs. Then next send a $1.00 payment to each of the 6 email addresses on the current list from your PayPal account. To do this quickly and successfully, follow these simple steps:
- Login to PayPal and click the “Send Money” tab near top of screen
- In the “Recipient’s Email” field type: the email address
- In the “Amount” field type: “1” (your $1.00 payment)
- In the “Category” field select: “Service” (Keeping it legal)
- In the “subject” field type: “EMAIL LIST”,
- In the “message” field type: “PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR EMAIL LIST”.
(By doing this, you are creating a service and maintaining the legality of the system by “paying” for the service. ) - Finally, click on the “Continue” button to complete the payment.
- Repeat these steps for each of the 6 email addresses. that’s it!
(By sending the $1.00 payment to each address, you are implementing
the compounding POWER of the system. You will reap what you sow! )
Here is the current e-mail list:
- fathe_byl@yahoo.com
- armoedz@gmail.com
- ibez@bigpond.com
- lawrence.a.spann@gmail.com
- melsott@hotmail.com
- mattias__ohlin@hotmail.se
STEP 3:
Now take the 1st email off of the list that you see above (from your saved file), Move the other addresses up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc.) and add YOUR email address (the one used for your PayPal account) as number 6 on the list. This is the only part of the document that should be changed.
** Make sure to use the email address you registered with PayPal **
STEP 4 now post new file created in STEP 3 to at least 200 newsgroups or message boards. Keep in mind that there are tens of thousands of groups online!
All you need is 200, but remember the more you post the more money you make - as well as everyone else on the list!
I’ve began to see money roll in before I even hit 100 posts, but try to hit around 200 to allow maximum exposure. Use Netscape, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or whatever your internet browser is to search for various news groups, on-line forums, message boards, bulletin boards, chat sites, iscussions, discussion groups, on-line communities, etc.
For example?
Log on to any search engine like yahoo.com or google.com and type in a subject like ‘MILLIONAIRE MESSAGE BOARD’,MONEY MAKING DISCUSSIONS’, ‘MONEY MAKING FORUMS’, or ‘BUSINESS MESSAGE BOARD’, etc. You will find thousands and thousands of message boards. Click them one by one and you will find the option to post a new message. Fill in the subject which will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, and post the article with the NEW list of email addresses included. THAT’S IT!!! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away. After you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup.
HOW THE MONEY WORKS
:
When you post 200 messages in various forums, it is estimated that at LEAST 15 people will respond and send you a $1.00 ($15.00). Those 15 will Post 200 Posts each and 225 people send you $1.00
($225.00), etc. through 6 levels of email addresses. For comprehension purposes, here is an easy viewing chart:
- 15(1) = 15 people ($1) = $15
- 15(15) = 225 people ($1) = $225
- 15(225) = 3375 people ($1) = $3375
- 15(3375) = 50625 people ($1) = $50625
- 15(50625) = 759375 people ($1) = $759375
As you can see, your SpamSpamSpamSpamSpamSpamSpam has multiplied exponentially. What other opportunity that is as simple as this can cash in the way this can?! I’m not going to say this is going to make everyone over $800,000, but within a few WEEKS you begin to see results, thanks to the speed of the internet!
When your name is no longer on the list, take the latest posting in the newsgroups and begin the process again. Simply amazing…Follow the system as described, and enjoy your PROFITS!!!
REMEMBER… HONESTY AND INTEGRITY = PROFITABILITY YOUR NAME COULD CYCLE FOR A LONG TIME!
Good luck!
HOW TO POST TO NEWS GROUPS?
Use Netscape or Internet Explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)
Log on any search engine like yahoo.com, google.com, altavista.com, excite.com, etc. Search with the subject "millionaire message board; or; money making message board; or; employment message board; or making money discussions; or; money making forum; or; business message board; etc. You will find thousands & thousands of message boards.
Click on them one by one and you will find the option ‘post a new message’.
Then Post this article as a ‘new message’ by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting copy then paste from the edit menu.
Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button.
You’re done with your first one! It only takes about 60 seconds to complete postings on message boards
after you catch on.
REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! !!!GOOD LUCK!!

I came here to mention this book. Everybody I know (who read a true crime book on the subject) read Killer Clown, but Buried Dreams. . . I had to put it down and give it a rest several times. Very disturbing.
Robert Resslear, head of the serial killer unit of the FBI, describes his initial interview with John Wayne Gacy in his book Whoever Fights Monsters. Gacy remembered growing up in the same neighborhood as Resslear. At first Resslear thought he was being conned, until Gacy started describing the neighborhood and even remembered some unusual flowerpots Ressler’s mother had on their front porch.
And Ann Rule got the contract to write her first book about the disappearance and murders of several young women before Ted Bundy was even a suspect.
Talk about true life coincidences that wouldn’t be believed if they were fiction!
I’ve read “Buried Dreams”. I remember it most because Gacy’s company specialized in renovating pharmacies, and guess why? So he could steal drugs! I told some of my colleagues about this, and how he told officers about how generous pharmacists are (um, not if they want to keep their licenses, they aren’t!) and we had a good, if morbid, laugh about it. Otherwise, the book was really, really disturbing on so many levels.
There’s also a book called “Rites of Burial” about Bob Berdella, who is known to have killed at least 6 men in Kansas City in the 1980s, and was caught when a hostage escaped; he jumped out a window and ran down the street wearing nothing but a dog collar with a leash attached to it. This case was described on that notorious Satanism special hosted by Geraldo Rivera in the late 1980s, and can be seen on You Tube. A local documentary filmmaker made a low-budget movie about it called “Bazaar Bizarre”, which includes interviews with the escapee, and states that at least 40 men, most of them gay as was Berdella, disappeared from the Kansas City area during the time he was known to be killing. Berdella himself died in prison several years later.
I found Eat Thy Neighbor, which was about the history of cannibalism, to be even more disturbing than Helter Skelter. (An excellent book, btw)
p.s. After his arrest, Berdella complained that his jail cell had an insect infestation, so an Obnoxious Morning Deejay announced a “Bugs For Berdella” campaign, where people could bring insects in a jar to the station, and he would take them to the jail and find some way to get them into Berdella’s cell, I guess.
Here’s another book, about the biggest mass casualty school disaster in American history. We can’t blame the removal of mandatory prayer in schools for this, because it happened in 1927, and most of the carnage was committed with dynamite. My reference to jars made me think of this, because unlike nowadays, the crime scene was not sealed off, and local people showed up with jars for the collection of souvenirs. We haven’t changed as much as we think we have. And a warning should you read the book: One of the pictures is of the perpetrator after he blew himself up.
The few remaining survivors are all in their 90s now.
I chose this link, and not a link to the book itself, because I think the story of “Gone at 3:17” involved some criminal behavior too. I’ll have to check THAT book out as well. That disaster, which almost nobody nowadays has ever heard of, happened in 1937, and took the lives of nearly 300 Texas schoolchildren.
That’s right, THREE HUNDRED children.
Actually, true crime books seem to be more popular with women.
*"According to the researchers, women are drawn to true crime books for these reasons:
To learn how to prevent becoming a victim.
To learn how to survive being a victim.
To learn warning signs to watch for.
To learn escape tips, survival strategies.
In other words, women read true crime books out of their fear of becoming a crime victim so that they can learn how to prevent of survive such a crime, according to the researchers…
Ironically, reading true crime books might actually increase the fear that prompts women to read those very books in the first place, the authors suggest.
“Despite the fact that women may enjoy reading these books because they learn survival tips and strategies, it is possible that reading these books may actually increase the very fear that drives women toward them in the first place,” Vicary wrote."*
Another factor is that true crime books about dysfunctional families and murderous spouses appear more popular with women than books about serial killers - at least based on preferences in my own household.
Wiki’s death count is 45. Where did you get 300?
Nearwildheaven described two different incidents: the Bath school disaster which resulted in 44 deaths (the Bath Massacre link), and the New London, Texas school explosion which killed more than 295 people (the “Gone at 3:17” reference).
Yes, it must have been you. I looked at the Sylvia Likens wikipedia page and it fits the details I remember (though I am obviously misremembering some of them). I read one of those two books, not sure which. I was so thoroughly horrified and saddened by Sylvia’s story.
