Yeah, we were in Bogota for a week, Facatativa I think was a suburban train station . It was 1972.
Actually, that’s a good one that surprised me. I am not a warm weather, beachy place kind of traveler. I like cities. I like clouds. I don’t like lounging around on a beach. If I’m gonna lounge, it’s going to be at a campground where I can start a fire and breathe in the smell of wet grass and trees.
However, I absolutely loved Dubrovnik. I’ve been there twice, and it’s just such a magical, historical town. Just wandering around the old city walls sated my desire for history and culture and the urge to explore. The crystal blue-green-clear waters of the Adriatic were nice, too, (I was enamoured enough with the city that I actually did go take a dip in them, something I’m not likely to do at a beach), but just getting lost walking around town for a few days was enough to keep me entertained.
What outfit did you travel with in the Grand Canyon?
I recently became really depressed when I realized that I would never again be able to hike Harney Peak in the Black Hills or any other long trail hiking.
My knees just won’t take it. Just the pounding of walking down the three flights of stairs from my apartment hurts. The last time I hiked Harney, about 10 years ago, I had to keep stopping on the way down because my knees hurt so much. No way I can do that today.
I’ve been to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, but I did it the hard way.
From the ages of 19 to about 39, I figured that if I had to leave New York City I could only live in Paris. Since then I’ve been to Vienna and Barcelona several times, and they are right up there with Paris.
Last year I fell in love with Llubljana, the capital city of Slovenia. I might be able to live there, but it might be kinda limiting. It’s gorgeous, but far from a world-class city.
We’ve been going to Mount Desert Island in Maine nearly every summer since 1984. We usually rent a cottage on the “quiet side” (away from Bar Harbor and most of Acadia Nat’l Park), so we get a marvelous combination of Peaceful and the option to go drinking and get ice cream and dine well if we feel like it. Chain retail stores and fast food are forbidden on the island, so it’s also a great getaway from Amerika.
In no particular order:
Salisbury, England. The cathedral and how it was presented.
Gut St Anne’s Gaelic college (and the Cabot trail), Cape Breton Island
Butchart Gardens, Vancouver Island, BC
St Anne deBeaupre Cathedral, Quebec. (my late wife was conceived there)
College fjord, Alaska.
I just got back from another weekend at one of my absolute favorite places, Point Reyes. Tons of birds and wildlife, lush green forests, miles and miles of trails and scenic roads, dramatic coastlines, and I have a peaceful, quiet place to spend the night just outside of Inverness. All just a couple of hours from home–can’t ask for more than that.
I think you mean you hiking, right? I hiked down the trail, but opted for a helicopter back out. Did you hike both directions? Hats off to you – it looked like an arduous climb to me.
