I’ll second all the skeptic/anti-pseudoscience podcasts mentioned above and suggest two more that I’m surprised haven’t come up already:
The Geologic Podcast - Intelligent comedy and music interspersed with atheism and skepticality Skeptoid - Pithy critical analysis of various woo-woo phenomena
[Links go to iTunes for those so inclined.]
Thanks to all of you above who’ve introduced me to fresh podcasts in this thread.
The Bill Simmons podcasts come in three flavours - the ones with JackO and other assorted Simmons’ hangerson, ones I call Yakking About Sports With Famous People, and the I Are Serious Sportswriter podcasts, usually with guys like Aaron Schatz from Football Outsiders.
The first kind are almost always skippable, and have gotten worse and more self-indulgent as they’ve gone on. The second kind are very often entertaining if he can establish a rapport with the guest - the Seth Meyers ones are always quite interesting, and Jon Hamm was another recent good one, even if he did have an unhealthy mancrush going on. The third kind are generally excellent - if you care about the sport. I’ll always learn something from the NFL podcasts, and I’ll even occasionally sit through an NBA one, especially if it’s a David Stern interview since he has this antagonistic sycophant thing going on when he’s talking to him that’s really fascinating. In these last ones it’s not so much Simmons as the guest, and he does have a way of asking interesting and probing questions most of the time.
ESPN made a big mistake by stifling Patrick and causing him to leave. The Worldwide Leader is doing similar things to Simmons and Dave Dameshek on the podcasts as well.
I’ve given Carolla’s podcast a shot (I remember thinking his morning radio show was awful); it’s listenable but not quite focused enough on topics of interest for me. I can see its appeal (and it’s much better than his old radio show).
I like hearing smart guys talking sports, so I don’t particularly care about the show-biz guests until Simmons gets to the sports talk. The one a couple weeks back with John Hollinger (the basketball stat guy for ESPN) pressed my sports geek buttons quite well.
I resurrected the thread to ask a question. How the hell can I download the podcasts? All I got is Quicktime and to download it asks me to buy the “pro” version.
Great selection of podcasts by the way.
As Simplicio said, once you get to the page where there’s a link to the podcast as an mp3 file, just right-click on that link and choose “Save Target As…” to save the podcast to your hard drive. You can then copy or sync them to your mp3 player.
There are a number of different programs (like iTunes) that you can use to subscribe to podcasts, but I just subscribe to the RSS feeds using Internet Explorer.
I use iTunes. You can select all your regular podcasts, and it will download them all at once when you click “refresh”. Then I use Blackeberry Media Sync to load them on my Blackberry. Easy-Peasy!
