I just read The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey . Very good, seriously puts down the idea that Richard III killed “the princes in the Tower”.
However, so then I decided to read her first book in the Inspector Grant series Man in the Queue
Spoiler follows for a 1929 book.
So Insp Grant does a marvel of detection, finds the victim name, then a possible suspect. Many chapters later- finally catches said suspect.
Only to have someone else come in and confess- Grant was wrong all along. 
I dont get how anyone bought any more in the series!?!
Aubrey/Maturin of course, and the Culture novels by Iain M. Banks.
