I don’t think they actually ran during the same years, but I always thought a Barney Miller/Night Court pairing would be good on a classic/rerun TV station. It would be as close as we could get to a comedy Law & Order.

I kind thought Taxi and Cheers should have been back-to-back since the cabbies would often go to a bar after work and we’d see scenes there. Different towns, though.

I was just thinking about Night Court & Barney Miller last night. I was a big fan of hte former during its original run, but never watched the latter until the last few months. I was surprised to notice that Reinhold Weege, who created NC, was a writer for BM–until I thought about it. NC was more absurdist, of course, but there were many similarities between the two shows.

When Night Court debuted, some reviewers called it “Son of Barney Miller” since it showed what eventually happened to the kind of whackos Miller and crew regularly dealt with at the precinct.

BM ran from 1974 to 1982, NC from 1984 to 1992.
