What are your grocery store splurges?

Frappucinos are my secret (well, until now) shame. I usually pick up a couple from the cooler case at the store every time I go. Also Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake ice cream, which is to die for. TO DIE FOR, I say! Even MrWhatsit agrees with me here, and he is not usually a big cheesecake fanatic.

I also have a hard time avoiding the Kalamata olives. They are so delightfully tasty and yet I never manage to use them all up before they go bad. Such a waste of expensive olives, but more often than not they sneak their way into my cart anyway.

Oh, YUM! I’ve tried to sell others on this, but no go. I can’t eat Doritos without sour cream anymore.

My splurges? Fresh fruit and (even though I usually make my own) whipped cream in a can. I just like being about to go into the fridge and shoot it in my mouth. Also, mascarpone cheese can get pricey, but I pick that up once in a while. I like getting little lunch things for my son, like chocolate milk chugs and single-serving veggies with dip, but those are muy expensivo, so I try to only get them when they’re on sale.

I should say, when I get fresh fruit at the grocery store, it’s a splurge because I get more than we’ll eat, and it gets expensive.

When farmers’ market starts here, though, all bets are off. Woo, farmers’ market!

I avoid the candy aisle, otherwise I end up with chocolate I don’t really need but will want the second I see it. So I’m good and go to the checkout with everything on my list. But because I’m so good, I get to grab a ditz magazine. I used to get “Mademoiselle,” but since they’ve stopped publishing it, I’ve switched to Cosmo or Glamour, or similar magazines. I’m not allowed to subscribe to them because reading more than one every 3-4 months makes me crazy, so I wouldn’t read them if I subscribed.

So…you see the nascar dish set at walmart yet? Right near the Coke ones…

I looked long and hard the new Chips Ahoy Creamwiches today, but finally decided against them.

Ice cream-I gave up the Creamwiches for a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Pistachio Pistachio.

Every so often, I like to go to Whole Foods and get some canned organic soup. They’re more than twice the price of a 79-cent Campbell’s Chicken Noodle, but Campbell’s doesn’t make anything as good as potato and leek or spicy green lentil or black bean. I’m a big soup fan, so it’s worth it.

Zapp’s potato chips, usually the Cajun Dill flavor. If the gods eat chips, they eat these.

Mother’s chocolate chip cookies. Chips Ahoy may have the variety and the press, but these are the best packaged choco chip cookies I’ve had, IMHO.

French bread

Carr’s crackers

(Reading this list makes me realize I need to eat more fruit.)

My weakness is Pringles, a packet of dry generic “Onion Soup” and a pint of sour cream. I get home, mix up the sour cream and soup, pour a big glass of Coke over ice and settle in.

I haven’t done this in quite awhile, I feel a splurge coming on!!

Sometimes I splurge on expensive jar tomato sauce. It’s nowhere near as good as homemade, of course, but it’s way better than Classico, which is what I usually get.

I should never have read this thread before going grocery shopping!

Since I got into this healthier-food kick, the chips, salsa, cookies, candy bars, and sigh ice cream are extremely rare to extinct purchases. (I did buy 2 packages of Oreos–they were buy one, get one–for the hubby last out. Yes, I can have those in the house and not eat them.)

So, my indulgences are of the mental kind–People magazine and Maxim. Yeah, that’s right, I’m a chick and I love Maxim! So there!

Still, when it comes to food, I like to get berries (ooh, strawberries), fresh French bread, and those pre-marinated Foster Farms thingys. Yeah, I know, I live life on the wild side.

I splurge on ridiculously small packages of something unusual.

Like a can of Hot Wasabi Peas
or coconut milk because it is on sale

Usually, it’s the trashy papers at the checkout. But not the Weekly World News; I get the ones that manage to stay justthisclose to believable. I just have to know about Julia Roberts’ beating up her married lover’s wife or some such.

Last week, however, the Giant had Fudgesicles on special; buy one box of 20, get one free. So I have 40 Fudgesicles (well, about 30 by now) in the freezer.

Hot wasabi peas?!! We always pick those out of the sesame cracker mix. I thought they were just an evil joke. We won’t even give them to the DOG, lest the ASPCA come after us.

My biggest splurge is off-season fruit. Mmmmm, cherries in February!

It’s those damn strawberries for me too. I just can’t resist them. Every now and then, the raspberries and blackberries call out to me too.

If the store currently has Ben and Jerry’s Kaberry Kaboom in stock, it is in my cart. It catches me in its tractor beam every damn time.

However, today I successfully managed to pull myself away from the Godiva White Chocolate Raspberry ice cream. I still don’t know how I did it. And it was on sale!

My wife has forbidden me to go shopping with an empty stomch. :frowning: … although it is for good reason.

Just yesterday:

4 pack of Stewart’s Orange/Vanilla Cream Soda
1 bottle of Malta Goya, just to see what it tastes like (unfermented wort, for you beer brewers…)
1 jar Recaito
2 New York Strip steaks - about $15
pitted oil cured olives
1 box Berry Kix that I convinced myself was for the baby, but I know is for me (damned if they don’t taste like Crunch Berry Cereal!)
Frozen French toast sticks
REAL maple syrup
Honeycup mustard
1 box L’ecolier cookies

I really shouldn’t shop on an empty stomach.

Cashews
chips of all kinds
pre-packaged salad (I’m too lazy!)
Fish sticks!!! (Just the thing when you’re too tired to cook)
Jeno’s Pizza Rolls
M&M’s - the two-pound bag
Drumstick ice cream cones ($7 for eight)
Unusual spices

I also like to buy gadgets in the kitchenware aisle…

no cookies or chips for me. I’m off sugar and chips are not good for the waistline. :frowning:

But I LOVE to splurge on vegan and soy meat, cheese and snacks…delicous and quilt free! :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi All!
coke coke and coke.addicted? me? naw…
3 musketeers bars or the lil ded brownies for the wifey…
and I like the new campbell’s chunky soups, supper bakes,
and really really like the Stouffers Homestyle Bakes (except
the ham and hashbrowns, good idea wrong thing in box.

  rich in seattle.

do not give me a credit card…

Ben & Jerry’s, of course (usually Phish Food).

Also, Fresh Fields has all these unusual, tasty cheeses (normally about two or three varieties set out to sample on toothpicks so one must buy even more…). They have this fabulous Red Dragon cheese which I must buy every time I go in there…a rich, mild cheese with mustard seed and ale…mmmmmm.

Not really grocery store—normally more like a CVS/Rite Aid—somehow I have this huge thing for the arts & crafts in the school supplies aisle. Glitter, beads, a new kind of crayon or marker–I’m a sucker!

I have a freezer full of salmon filets.

Or, rather, partial salmon filets… Around here it’s Sam’s Club instead of Costco, but same principle. And they sell these giant salmon filets the size of my leg, which I buy for Summer Grillin’. And the most perfect thing about it is that it’s already skinned, unlike the salmon at the regular groceries around here. I get skeeved skinning anything.

Of course, even with a friend or two over I generally don’t use the whole thing, so I cram most of it into the freezer…

…then the next time I end up grilling (usually a spur-of-the-moment decision), I’m like, “Damn… all the salmon’s frozen… and I’m hungry now… guess I’ll go buy another filet…”

It’s a vicious cycle.
