What are your mundane epiphanies?

That women are really just people.
(A geeky shyness had me convinced they were an alien race, full of mystery and power.)

If you are offered your choice of ice cream flavors and they only have vanilla choose vanilla.

Do the right thing the right way one time. Then do it again.

Heh, I was coming in here to say, that lots of men really don’t see me as a person, but as a “chick,” and as such, automatically prone to chick hive mentality. It made me sad.

Now that, for the first time in a long time, George W. Bush is NOT President, I realize that law is the keystone of democracy.

When I was a young kid buses had conductors who would walk around, identify new passengers and sell them a ticket.
We all of us used to try to be as inconspicuous as possible so that we could get away without paying.

One day after a journey of about six miles on a very, very slow bus and being tense, nervous and sweaty for the entire time I got off at my destination and realised that I’d put up with all that mental discomfort to save a miniscule amount of money.

After that I’d make a point of paying and sit back and enjoy the journey.

I recently came up with the Tao of the Duck, I have no idea if it’s a real thing. The concept is the same as Lobsang’s “worrying about things doesn’t solve them”. The Way of the Duck is this; all problems are like water, be like the duck and either glide through them or let them roll off your back …

Or else you might just quack up!
I’ve been dabbling in the idea of forming a religion based on this. My acolytes will be known by their waddling gaits and we will greet each other by a secret series of quacks which will not echo. When we form in groups it will be called a Clusterduck.

My favorite line from HGttG is:

“… we’ll be saying a big hello to all intelligent life forms everywhere … and to everyone else out there, the secret is to bang the rocks together, guys.”

It made me realize that all of civilization is created just by banging rocks together. Even my own research was like this. Hit this rock (chunk of code) with that rock (lower bound proof) and see if anything interesting happens. That’s what you get from ape-descended life forms.

I’ve started to realize that this general approach works for a great many more serious issues as well.
