I recall riding north on Ca Rt 101, where is runs by the south end of SF by. People used to put up borads with all manner of junk nailed to them (old hub caps, signs, bottles, etc.). These things were quite common-but i haven’t seen them in years…what happened? Were they adjudged not artistic? Do any examples reside in art museums today?
Are you thinking of the Emeryville mudflat sculptures?
Geez, I loved those sculptures, especially the rock band. I was stationed at Travis AFB for 10 years, between Sacramento and San Francisco, and a highlight of the drive south was looking at the mudflats. Years later after I had left, I asked someone who had recently visited the city if he had noticed the sculptures and he didn’t know what I was talking about. I didn’t know they had been taken down.
The link you provided answered my question; I also remember seeing them in “Harold and Maude”.
Gotta love the SDMB-answers to all the important questions!
You sir, are a prince!
