What can I do about the Post Office not delivering my packages

Over the last couple of months I seem to been having a problem with getting all of my packages to me. Sometimes even my normal mail is coming late.

Back in November my girlfriend left a bracelet in a hotel, they sent it to us and it took a month to get to us. A few weeks later we got a letter from the hotel dated two months before saying they had sent us a package.

For christmas I ordered some CDs from Romania, figuring it would take some time I ordered long before Christmas. I waited, and waited, and waited, then a couple of days before Christmas I got a notice saying the package was to be sent back. It seems that they wanted to give it to me but never gave me the notices, the package had been sitting around the post office for a month.

Also during the holidays a number of cards, I can remember a few cards being returned more then once. Every one of them have had the correct address on it.

Then today I got an email from a seller on eBay saying that the item I bought last week was returned to him and asking if the address is correct, it is.

This is just way too many things, at least to me, that have gotten returned, or sat around for a month or more. I get mail that is for me, but has a different name. One group I belong to somehow got the idea that my name is Eddiemike, don’t know how, but stuff from them comes no problem. I have talked to my mail carrier directly one day, he knows who lives in the house and said he hasn’t returned anything. So somewhere someone doesn’t think I exist, or my address doesn’t exist.

What can I do about it, I have been to the post office once, when the bracelet never showed, and they said they couldn’t do anything about it. I don’t really want to pay for a post office box since I wouldn’t be able to pick up my packages easily. I did give what I hope is the correct nine digit zipcode, but even that could be wrong. It just seems strange that for a year and a half plus I got my mail with zero problems, now a good 20% or so that I know is comming have not gotten here.

I wouldn’t take the word of a window clerk. I’d ask to speak to the postmaster, and ask them to investigate. Late mail can result in lots of Very Bad Things happening, including late payments to creditors and so forth. If the postmaster isn’t being cooperative, talk to the Postal Inspectors in your area.

It sounds like a mail sorter at the post office isn’t doing a very good job. It almost makes you wonder who else isn’t getting their mail.

To make it easier to find that postmaster. You can even escalate up the chain by county, region, state if you feel nothing is happening.

Go to www.usps.gov, the section “find a Zip Code”, and enter your own address.

You will get that address the way the Post Office wants it to be written (suprisingly often, this isn’t the way people are used to doing it!). It will also show the correct 9-digit zip code for your address.

It ain’t just you.

Mail delivery has definitely slowed down over the past few months. It recently took a package mailed from a location less than 120 miles away 13 days to get to my home. Regular mail that took 2 days now takes 4 or 5.
