I just have to say, buttermilk is yummy! Too thick the way it comes, though, but you can water it down. I use half a cup of buttermilk to half a cup of icy water. Then stir really really well.
Love that salty taste.

My Grandfather did that, while eatting really hot bannana peppers.
Are ya’ll from around here?
I too must admit to drinking buttermilk. I little really cold buttermilk is very refreshing on a very hot day.
Yes, my folks were from the South.
No one’s mentioned mashed potatoes yet? For shame! I’ll never drink it straight, but it is wonderful stuff for all sorts of recipes.
Just remember that when you use buttermilk for pancakes, biscuits or other baking that you need to add a little baking soda as a substitute for part of the normal baking powder amount, i.e., in pancakes, use two tsp of baking powder, and a quarter to half teaspoon of baking soda.
That was going to be my recommendation.
Buttermilk 'n cornbread. Yumm
And the good news is that it takes forever to go bad, so if you don’t feel like using it you can let it mellow in the fridge for a few weeks. It’s already teeming with microflora that beat the bejeezus out of any foolish foreign microbes that attempt to invade.
I always thought it came bad. I’m a sweet milk kind of guy.
In my fridge, approximately one month before developing a fuzzy green crust (oops).
I use it for making homemade ranch dressing. Basically mix the following ingredients to taste: buttermilk, real mayo, lemon juice, chives, dill, onion powder and pepper. That Naan recipe looks great though, I will have to try it.
Right now I’m leaning toward naan or buttermilk pie, since I don’t deep-fry anything at home. Thanks for the ideas and recipes, and feel free to keep them coming!
With the crust?
Send it to any old person. Buttermilk is God punishing old people.
Well, only when I run out of chives!
I can’t express how disappointed I was as a child when I found out buttermilk tastes NOTHING like butter.
Well, I’m not from the South, and I’m with you. I’ve never even been further south than Tennessee.
Well. Ok, Florida. But that doesn’t really count, even though we drove there.
Come on, ya’ll don’t know what buttermilk is. You just stare at us when we order sweet milk in a restaurant.
Corbin, KY.
The clan migrated to Florida in the 50’s, with me being the first Cracker (native born Floridian) in the family.
No, I’m Indian. We call it *lassi * and drink it salty (or sweet, but I prefer salty).
Cool.
This is Alton Brown’s excellent buttermilk pancake recipe from Good Eats. I’ve made them before and they’re really fluffy and delicious.
Another buttermilk recipe, this time for biscuits.
