To me, marmite (the English variety) is silkier, and reminds me more of the beef drippings from a prime rib or filet mignon. While Vegemite is a bit heartier, and more reminiscent of the drippings from a nice pot roast.
I use vegemite when using it in a stew or soup or other mix. I prefer marmite when I’m eating it on a simple english muffin with butter.
It’s almost blashphemy to be an Aussie and not like Vegemite…but I hate it! Even thinly spread it’s too much. But I do like Marmite on hot buttered toast or on fresh white bread. My kiwi hubby likes Vegemite spread thick for a good helping of vitamin B - yuck!
Well, Marmite sucks and Vegemite rules. Thats all you need to know. Marmite has kind of a sweet tang to it, whereas Vegemite is salty and sour (kind of).
Bung it on some toast is the most popular way to go, as has been noted. I’ve been known to go tomato slices on top of vegemite/toast, but usually you’d be eating it neat or with cheese (in a sandwich). Lately, I’ve been trying a teaspoon or so in casseroles/stews to good effect.
I love Vegimite; favorite breakfast treat is good toast, usually sunflower bread, with fresh ground (unsalted) peanut butter, a bit of Vegimite smeared light on top, with raw garlic sliced thin on top of that. An intensely delicious way to wake up.
Chiming in to say the vegemite and chopped nut sandwich was a lunch staple for me when I was in primary school, but I didn’t see other kids with them either. Maybe it was a recipe idea suggested in a magazine that a few mums picked up on but nobody else.
Me, I like my vegemite on toast soldiers (with plenty of butter) to dunk into a nice soft boiled egg.
