Not really. While Trump was pledging to be “a President for all Americans” his supporters in the hall were chanting “Jail Obama!” and crowds in Manhattan were chanting “We hate the Muslims, we hate the blacks!”
What’s been proved is that the bigoted mob can prevail. That’s not something to be proud of.
I do not think that Trumps victory is about left or right, I think that it is about ordinary people feeling ignored. Their hope is that Trump will make the American administration answerable to the American public. The same thing is happening in the UK, ordinary people have had enough of being ruled by a cross party political elite that does not answer to the ordinary people. The lesson for the politicians is the working class is the majority and you can no longer ignore us
But the weird thing is, statistically, these working class Trump voters have average income much higher than the median income and unemployment (very) slightly lower than the national average.
I’m not saying these peoples lives are perfect, but it seems like the grievances these people have, economically, is a perception and not as much a reality. Obviously these are statistics and there are very real people in these classes who have lost their jobs, or know someone who has, but Democrats had plans to address these problems that were obviously inadequate to them for various reasons.
While I refuse to give into the racism or xenophobia many of Trump’s demographics support, assuming in good faith they would switch teams out of “being listened to” on their other problems, I’m legitimately confused about what we should be doing to help these largely middle class, low-unemployment voters that we weren’t already trying to do.
The big problem is the media who will not let the truth get in the way of the story they wish to write, I watched the speech where Trump stated that Muslim immigrants would not be allowed to enter America until they had passed strict security checks [COLOR=“Black”] I have also seen edited versions that omit the part about security checks, now all we hear is Trump will ban all Muslims fro America. This is a worldwide media problem where ordinary people cannot trust the information supplied by the media.

So Trump’s campaign didn’t say “Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on”? Nothing in there about security checks. I mean, “total and complete shutdown” is pretty absolute. Trump later said "We must suspend immigration from regions linked with terrorism until a proven vetting method is in place” but even that is a complete ban until some unspecified point at which a ‘proven vetting method is in place’ (which could mean never).
I’m sure there are some other speeches in which Trump gave fourteen other different versions of his policy on Muslims as was his wont, which is handy because on any given issue you can just ignore all the statements in which Trump says something different and pretend the version you agree with is the “real” one. The problem isn’t “information supplied by the media” here; it’s “information supplied by the candidate himself and his campaign”.
Indeed. I’ll likely bear little ill effect from a Trump presidency; in fact, I may come out ahead in some respects. But my friends and family may not be so lucky.
