What can you NOT easily get in Jordan (the country)?

mremilyforce is leaving for Irbid in Jordan (for dissertation research) Sunday - for nine whole months. As he keeps reminding me, Jordan IS a civilized country. Having had trouble procuring things I needed or wanted in various parts of the generally civilized US, I am skeptical.

Have any of you been to Jordan? Are there any quirks in stuff-availability there? Might prescriptions be a problem? How about something like toothpaste - is there broad choice in what’s available? (the mr is allergic to zinc, and so looks for toothpaste without it or any of its relatives.)

General Jordan advice also appreciated, but not specifically sought here.

You will not have a choice of 8 zillion breakfast cereals and won’t be able to find cheese in a can or lots of other crazy American products, but at least in Amman, most things should be available. You will likely have trouble finding some US brands as more things tend to come from Europe and Australia than in the US.

I’ve been to Jordan, and it is a fantastic, wonderful country.

Jordan isn’t without its problems, but one should be able to find all of the basics. The people are generally very friendly and accommodating. Life is easier and slower than in, say, Egypt or Syria.

Anyone who visits Jordan MUST visit Petra: an astounding place one will never forget.

Pack him lots & lots of Hormel Spam - just in case…

Erm. Thanks for the tip; I’ll pack him all the spam he wants…

Porn?

Native-born prostitutes might be a problem.

Amman is a very cosmopolitan city. You can find pretty much anything you want and everything you need. It is very laid back, there are bars and nice restaraunts, no need to pack a lot of anything.
