what causes "chills and fevers"?

I’m dealing with a bad head cold, and for the past three days, I’m alternately hot, and then cold. What causes it?

If you’re shivering with the “chills,” you have a fever that’s going up. If you have a thermometer, take your temperarture, If it’s higher than 100〫F, take Tylenol.
You’ll feel hot when the fever is coming down or is no longer going up.

If your fever is more than 102〫F , you probably should see a healthcare professional.

Not much I can add to the advice of a health care professional, but will just say that you get chills when your fever is going up because your body is trying to heat up, just as if you were out in cold weather. When it’s coming back down, your body is trying to cool off so you feel hot and often sweat.

Most viruses die when heated, so your amazing body gets hot to kill the little bastards off.
