What ceremony did I observe this morning?

Riding along the lakefront around 6:30 I passed a bunch of people on the beach. Some appeared to be wearing some sort of African or island garb, i.e. women had on those sort of boxy hats and both men and women were wearing loose-fitting long dress. One man was blowing on a long, curled horn, making a sort of shofar-like song with it. I can’t find any reference to any religious holiday or ceremony scheduled for August 13. Any ideas, Dopers? xo,
C.

What color were the clothes and hats? People gathered near a body of water suggests an evangelical baptism to me, but I’ve got no idea about the shofar-like horn.

I really can’t say about the clothing. It was sunrise and I was looking pretty much into the sun, so colors are hard to ID. I did see a man with white robes, but I couldn’t see much else.

Weird child of a southern AMA and Jews for Jesus? If it wasn’t for the shofar I’d say it was pretty typical for AMA or for an African American Baptist group, but the shofar is an interesting addition for sure.
