They have to learn sometime. Isn’t it best they understand the futility of existence right away, rather than have to come to that conclusion through an endless series of crushing losses? Eeyore nailed it: never having expectations means never being let down.
We ended up with a few truly awful kid movies, but the kids didn’t much like them. Mostly it was Sesame Street movies which had their charms; or Disney movies which the kids tired of before I ever got to the point of wanting to gnaw open my wrists. Got them started on Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter pretty early, so that was a nice compromise.
I loved the Puppenkiste when I was a child, and had no idea that I could be worn out to watch it as an adult by my children.
And “Krabat” by Otfried Preußler, but exclusively the Czech animated film created in 1978 for tv. My youngest developed an unholy obsession with the story and particularly this movie.
Mary Poppins (my aunt made me watch it.) Didn’t follow the books at all, and besides if that kid had started a bank account with his money after 20 years, assuming no stock market crashes, he would have had enough money to buy a wildlife sanctuary and feed thousands of birds rather than a couple dumb old pigeons. Stupid, stupid movie.
