I believe we went to war, both in Iraq and Afghanistan, under false pretenses and that the public was intentionally fed misinformation about it. Is that still a conspiracy theory, or has it moved into the realm of fact?
I believe that the Russian government was responsible for the apartment bombings that facilitated Putin’s rise to power, and sparked the second Chechnya war. “Darkness at Dawn” has a fairly good discussion of the reasons this theory has legs - basically, shortly after the bombings, a bomb was found in the basement of an apartment building, and the government claimed it was a “training exercise” with no further explanation. Creepy stuff - and if it’s true, this puts Putin in the running for one of the great monsters on the world stage.
Not overwhelming evidence, admittedly. And I don’t mean to sound like an apologist for the Chechen rebels - they’ve certainly done enough bad things, both before and since those bombings, to earn their own reputation for villainy.
Under what false pretenses did the U.S. invade Afghanistan?
I believe Aliens have been around earth. I mean I saw a thing on the Discovery Channel that had a recording of a NASA ASTRONAUT talking about him watching analien spacecraft before realizing he wasn’t on the encrypted DOD channel. As well as an all the ancient artwork and literutre talking about beings from the skys coming down and all that good stuff
I don’t know if this counts as a conspiracy theory, but I assume any athlete winning a gold medal is using steroids. I might give a pass to gold medalists in curling or pistol shooting, but every other one I assume is doped.
I sincerely believe that little trolls run around my bedroom at night rearranging items; particularly keys or items desperately needed in the next 24 hours.
In all sincerity, this is the only conspiracy theory yet listed that I am willign to grant any traction to at all. Given Putin’s apparent attitude towards the press, the democratic process, and the willingness to engage in or at least not earnestly prosecute those that have engaged in politically convenient killings… well, I wouldn’t use the term impossible even if it isn’t the most likely answer.
No. Get over it.
That is true…maybe it’s my cynicism of the government but they seem to love beating dead horses and I figured that something like the moon would have been one of their most favorite things to keep going back to or experiment on.
And I’m just telling people the conspiracy that I believe in. Don’t agree with it? Oh well. Take it to the pit or something…I’ll listen to the debaters with respect but I’m not going to automatically switch my mind with some trite “omg you must be kidding right?” response.
I, too, believe that Jordan left the NBA for reasons other than wanting to be like Bo.
This is the sci-fi reader in me talking, however, it wouldn’t shock me to find out that aliens have had a hand in shaping human evolution within the past 4 million years.
I believe that Dopers start threads like these to collect material to use against opponents in future arguments.
I believe Mossad was behind the capture/kidnapping of Abdullah Öcalan.
You don’t think the Russians, Chinese, and perhaps even Canadians, U.K. et-fucking-cetera had radio telescopes pointed at the moon and were eavesdropping on all of this shit? Come on.
That Bush and his fellow neocons knew 9-11 was going to happen ( but were not directly behind it ), and deliberately cleared the way for the 9-11 attacks in order to create the “new Pearl Harbor” the PNAC types said they wanted, in order to push their agenda.
Of course not. You didn’t reason your way into this belief so why would reason bring you out of it?
The problem with this is that people at much lower levels of government would necessarily had to have discovered the plot first, and it would’ve gone through a lot of channels before reaching Bush. You can’t have a “just the people at the very top” scenario here. Deliberately cleared the way is an extraordinary claim so I assume you have extraordinary evidence for it, right?
If you want to rein in it a few notches and say they knew something was going to happen - probably with airplanes - but not exactly when or where or what or who, and they were neglectful in trying to prevent it, well, at least that’s harder to disprove, and there may even be some evidence for it. It’s debatable.
Add some ferns and pipe in some music and it will be fine.
A little thought about physics may change your mind. The weight of a manned spaceship is many times that of an unmanned explorer. In addition, the lunar lander needed to carry enough fuel to lift off from the moon and the lunar orbiter needed enough fuel to return to earth. All this made moon landings incredibly expensive.
Also, once we went to the moon there was little public interest in subsequent flights.
Not a sinister government plot or anything, but I have my suspicions about New Coke.
How is it an extraordinary claim ? They said they wanted something like it to happen, and all that would be required is for them to forbid action. They are also completely ruthless and amoral. And it’s not like any of them need to fear being punished even if discovered.
Some indicators : Bush calling the state Department off Osama as soon as he got into office; ignoring the Clinton Administration’s warning; that fellow Bush told “you’ve covered your ass”, when he also warned him. Ashcroft refusing to use commercial flights. The insistence on setting up anti-aircraft defenses for things like the G-7 summit. no, there’s no smoking gun, but there never will be because the Democrats are to gutless to even look.
When someone says they want something to happen, and it happens, it’s not that unreasonable to suspect that they arranged it to happen. And while it would be better to wait for a real investigation, there never will be one. And he’d just pardon himself anyway.
Interesting. I’ve never heard that one before, but it makes sense.
Read what he asked again. I think he was more making the point of a lot of other conspiracies requiring both high levels of government knowledge and information that had to be collected through lower levels: why has no one blown the whistle with specific allegations about this?
I tend to believe theories that there have been some great innovations in energy saving motors for cars, but that the large oil companies have worked hard to keep them off the market. And considering billions of dollars in oil profits have been made recently, it doesn’t take a stretch of the imagination to think lots of money could have been paid out to stop/buy patents for new designs and tuck them away.
I also believe the White House knew there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and simply wanted to get rid of Saddam and/or finish “daddy’s” war with Iraq…but they were too stupid and never figured it would get this out of control.
I also believe Dick Cheney and his sock puppet, Dubya, had a hand in making sure their cronies profited in this endless war.
I also believe the word Republican in the USA is a code word meaning: White, racist, bigot, homophobic war monger - but they pretend it just means fiscal conservative.
