I am so sick and fucking tired of the bloody conspiracy theories-mostly the one that this wasn’t Bin Laden at all, but our own government trying to raise Bush’s popularity and his prestige.

Look-DOES the administration have evidence of Bin Laden? I’m sure they do. Why should they tell the fucking Taliban-who refused to hand over the guy when he was responsible for the fucking Cole?

I don’t like Bush. I am a lefty, yes. BUT…I also consider myself a sane, rational human being and the whole idea that the CIA and Bush are behind this crap is too out there for me.
Puh-lease. Who said Bush is behind it? That’s just plain sick. Our own president causing the deaths of so many Americans - hewould have to be psycotic, and so would many people around him…Just does not wash.
But there has to be something to those photos of bin Laden with Bert! Bert was in on it!
Actually, I LIKE a really good conspiracy theory - you know, one that shows a detailed grasp of many issues, willingness to think laterally, and almost sounds perfectly plausible when you’re under the influence of some tasty alcoholic beverages.
Unfortunately, the current crop doesn’t fit those criteria. Such a complete lack of creativity in rumor-mongers these days! Now, about those members of the Marseilles underground that were hired by the CIA/Mafia to get rid of JFK…
It was the Jews of course. After all, it took place right before their day of atonement, and the Jews run everything.
There was no conspiracy. Four airline pilots all went crazy at the same time and crashed their planes. Like going postal.
Someone I know actually believes that the 19 hijackers did it all themselves, nobody else was involved, and since they all died, we shouldn’t be doing anything about it. For real!
It stunns me completely that folks that I otherwise think are sane and reasonable come up with some of these conspiracies. Maybe I should rethink my definition of sanity or something.
For example: a fellow I know that teaches at a local tech school is firmly convinced that our government was truly behind the acts of 9/11. :eek:
Another fellow, one that I work with, is absolutely sure that V.P. Cheney is either on his deathbed or already dead. This being the reason said V.P. has not been publicly scrutinized lately. :rolleyes:
I hear you Guinastasia but I don’t think it’s too bad here at the SDMB. You should check out alt.fan.rawilson at some point. It’s basically been taken over by soemone who thinks everything is the work of the CLuMs (gotta love that name) which stands for Clandestince Luciferian Masons. And, as if that wasn’t enough, he has decided that Heidi Klum is a part of their plans, even though she doesn’t know it. It happened slowly, at first, he’d post a couple of messages a week, but now he’s all but taken over the NG with his conspiracy rantings. Since the events of the 9/11 he’s been saying it’s the CLuMs who are behind this, that Bush is one of them, and that Bush’s speaches contained numerous Masonic references coded in them. Want an example? According to this nut, when Bush says “…Make no mistake about it…” in one of his speaches, since “No Mistake” has “No Mis” in it, it’s a CLuM code to mean SIMON, which is a name that has great meaning to CLuMs. :rolleyes:, :rolleyes: and :rolleyes:. At least here we don’t get any of that.

I believe that conspiracy theories fulfill some psychological need or, were they true, would serve to validate some agenda the believer wishes to promulgate. The assertion that the government would kill it’s own in some twisted PR coup might be evidence of a pre-existing yet groundless mistrust, or perhaps is a symptom of paranoia in general. At any rate, count me among those sick of conspiracy theories. I’m glad I can find something Guin and I can agree on after all that ‘School of the Americas” business.
Alot of conspiracies are way to far out there to be given any credibility. That is not to say that no conspiracies at all exist. There have been many conspiracies in the past (Nixon comes to mind, so does the CIA’s involvement in the crack trade, cops lying for each other about plungers), and I’m sure there have been many more that have never been discovered.
To just take everything that is reported in the news and that politicians tell you, is to be naive. People lie for profit and pleasure and power. They break laws, and try to hide the fact. Many get away with it. To just trust blindly would be foolish. I question everything and trust nobody I don’t know personally. I am not saying there is a conspiracy, but I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to find out there are MANY.
So you must always question everything. Eventually you choose what you think really happened, but take a nice long look at it from every angle before you go ruling things out.
Re: Aliens
Any conspiracies about aliens are highly unlikely for many reasons. But what would the governments reaction be if they found aliens or their ruins? Many think it is reasonable to hide the fact for national security, depending on the circumstances. So I can’t entirely discount these ideas either. I listen and use my experience and intuition to try to make out the truth in that foggy gray thing we call reality. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to find out truth is stranger than fiction . . .
So, like, when you said “I hear you Guinastasia but”, which contained “a but”, which, when reversed is “tuba” clearly indicates that there was somehow a marching band involved. And when you said “a CLuM”, it contains the letters A, C, L, and U… which is to throw you off into thinking that somehow the Civil Liberties thingy is behind this, but when you realize the “tube” bit, you simply rearrange the letters to give: UCLA… so clearly, this is the UCLA marching band having their moment in the limelight since their all envious of USC’s marching band being featured in the Fleetwood Mac song “Tusk”… its all clear to me now…
Of course conspiracies exist. There a thousands and thousands, probably millions of them.
I can’t be bothered to look up the exact quote, so I may mangle it a bit, and I don’t recall who said it for sure (how’s that for scholarly rigor), but I think it was Adam Smith who said (approximately) “Men of the same proffesion never gather together, except to conspire against the general public.”
Of course people conspire.
Where most conspiracy theorists go wrong is in trying to explain too much by their own pet theory. Or assuming that everything that happens is the result of some vast conspiracy.
There are countless conspiracies, but is there one (or even a few) who are “behind everything”, “pulling all the strings”? No.
They are ultimately as helpless and clueless as the rest of us.
While not an intellectual site like SAAN, there are quite a few well-informed political people on there-mostly whom I respect. But I’m TIRED of all the “there’s no evidence Bin Laden was behind it.” The FUCK?
