Cedar Point’s new roller coaster does something that scares the crap out of me. But hey, I’m no coaster guy. The highest section of track maybe 30 long just ends. ENDS! No bumper or anything, the car just stops there with nowhere to go. Then the short section of track disconnects from the track leading to it, slowly pivots until it is pointing straight down, then after a delay releases the car onto another section of track. No. Just no. What could possibly go wrong.
A strong wind gust at precisely the wrong moment?
“After experiencing Siren’s Call, you’ll never want to go on another coaster!”
As George Armstrong Custer one confidently boasted, “I foresee no problems!”
Built by the lowest bidder.
Well, i suppose the worst that could happen is that lots of people get killed.
I love coasters but that’s the kind I go on to prove something, as opposed to it being fun.
That’s a big fat nope for me.
It must be technically possible for the train to run off the end of the track, because it needs to do that to resume the ride after the track section tilts so that the previously-free end joins up with the vertical section below.
Of course there will be some sort of safety interlocks to prevent that happening, and one would hope they are designed to fail-safe rather than fail into a non-operational state and hopefully they will have multiple redundant safety systems that are sufficiently independent that they cannot fail in cascade, as well as some way of detecting failure before it becomes critical.
My Genteel Beloved just saw the video for the Cedar Point coaster, jumped back and said “Fuck no!!”.
Wise woman, My Genteel Beloved.
I predict lots of folks covered in vomit. And piss.
From what it looks like it doesn’t run off the track, it just runs to the end of the track near the top of the run when it’s slowed down, at that point they presumably have some interlocks in place to stop the cars and hold them in place, then the section of track with the cars on it rotates 90 degrees from horizontal to vertical, connects with other tracks, presumably with additional safety locks to make sure the connection is secure and then sends the cars down.
Not seeing that it’s all that much less safe than a loop de loop.
Looks fun, and we have annual passes for next year. Whoohoo!
Would you mind letting your next of kin tell us how it went?
Don’t judge me but I cried and peed myself watching that clip. On the other hand, when the doctor says I have 3 months to live I know where I’m going.
The beginning of that ride is exactly like Space Mountain.
I don’t like roller coasters at all. I get motion sick very easily and even if I didn’t, they are unpleasant to me at best. But for people who like them, I don’t see what’s so bad about this one. Isn’t the whole point to have a frightening experience? Surely you don’t think that the designers didn’t take precautions to ensure that the cars can’t actually run off the end of the track, even though it looks like they could.
Terrible movie, but great opening.
Yeah, I have to say, that looks fucking AWESOME!
