What crime is committed in TX for driving with expired temp tags?

My temporary license plates expired on Friday, August 5. The overnight company has the package which contains my new temporary tags until my permanent ones are issued. Unfortunately, they won’t arrive until Monday, August 8.

I know you’re not a lawyer and you don’t practice in my area. Does anyone know if it is a crime to drive with my expired tags when new ones have been issued without being received? Is it a crime which requires arrest or simply a ticket which could be disputed in court? I have my bill of sale, proof of insurance, temp registration and driver license with me at all times.

I also have the tracking number of the package which has my new temporary tags.

I’m pretty sure it’s just a ticketed offense, and may even get dismissed if you get the new tags before the court date, assuming you pay the court costs.

It’s a violation of the Transportation Code and a Class C misdemeanor. In other words, a ticket. Most officers will let you slide with your explanation, but stay off the road until Monday unless absolutely necessary.

I’m not your lawyer, you’re not my client, etc.
