what day is MER

I saw a watch it has a little bar for I assume day/date. It read MER/05. Is that an Abreviation for Monday in another language? If so what language. Google has failed me I don’t know where else to turn.

It’s short for Mercredi, which is Wednesday in French.

Since nobody else has been here since I posted, I thought I’d add that tomorrow it will say JEU for Jeudi, next VEN for Vendredi, next SAM for Samedi, next DIM for Dimanche, next LUN for Lundi, then MAR for Mardi.

Thank you much. That bit of my ignorance has been smited/smiten? Well looks like plenty more to go.

You’re welcome. FYI, if the watch belongs to someone you know, and they don’t know how to change it, that function is on the pin on the side. You pull it out half a stop and turn the knob one turn forward or backward to get the English abbreviation to show.

smote

Nope, past participle here: my ignorance has been smitten.

how bout smoted

Could it not also be an abbreviation fo the Spanish Miercoles, which is also Wednesday?

This claims smote is the past participle of smite in addition to being its past tense.

That would be a pretty tortured abbreviation.

French is the most likely, although it could be Italian, for mercoledi. Since it’s now Thursday, you should be able to tell for sure based on the post:

The Italian, in the same order, would be giovedi, venerdi, sabato, domenica, lunedi, martedi.

I have an Italian watch and a French watch with days of the week, but the full days, not the abbreviations, but it makes sense they would use the first three letters to abbreviate. BTW Neither the French nor the Italians capitalize the days of the week.

Maybe by a longshot, but I was also thinking that it could be an abbreviation for the Italian mercoledi.

Fair enough, but that’s the rarer choice: the ratio of google hits for “has smitten” to “has smote” is about 21:1 (n = 14,665).

The Spanish, in the same order, will be MIE, JUE, VIE, SAB, DOM, LUN, MAR (miercoles, jueves, viernes, sabado, domingo, lunes, martes).

fishbicycle is right on all counts. Pulling the pin partway out did allow to change the days. The wheel when you spin it has wed then mer then thu then jeu and so on. It apears it rotates it two clicks each time it goes past midnight. Is that a standard thing on all watches or an educated guess?

The watch was found in the parcking lot at the local mall. It was sitting on a shelf in an aquatances house. It’s Obviously sized for a women one with small wrists at that. It’s tight just going around three of my fingers. Looks just like a Wenger Avalanche based on pictures except it has ‘SMT DESIGN’ in small print on the front and only the triangle at the top of the dial is gold. My guess is it sells for $100 bucks new. It will probly sit on his till someone it might fit’s comes along.

I told him he should have turned it in to the malls lost and found. His arguement was that would just give it a different new own. Didn’t care to argue thats the story of the watch anyway.
