What did I toggle? Keyboard related.

Easy, except when you don’t know the answer, which I don’t:

It appears that I toggled something and now the top row of my keyboard is typing international characters rather than numbers and symbols:

`ăâêồđ-₫
~ĂÂÊỒĐ_+

It’s only doing this online; I can type numbers and symbols just fine in Word.

So what did I do, and how can I undo it?

Thanks. I’d use an exclamation point, but it would just be a Ă

Are you using a laptop or a desktop keyboard? Laptop keyboards tend to have more weird toggles than a run-of-the-mill desktop keyboard.

If not a laptop, then what brand/model of keyboard?

Laptop, Compaq Presario running XP.

Do you have another keyboard profile installed on that machine? It’s possible that you hit one of the Language Bar toggles (such as Alt+Shift). See if you have an indicator to the immediate left of the task bar notification area (which is the right side of the task bar, where the time shows up if you have the clock turned on, along with icons for many running programs). The indicator will be two uppercase letters, such as “EN” for English. If it’s there, and you click on it, a context menu will pop up to allow you to switch the keyboard profile. Make sure that the appropriate profile is selected – likely “English (United States)” for you.

Good idea, but no, I don’t.

Have a look in the Control Panel -> Regional Settings. Language bar may have been hidden.

Thanks, Myglaren! That took care of it.
