I saw many wonderful thingss at the Marathon this past Sunday. I saw my cousin, 42 years of age, running and waving, hugging us and smiling as she saw us. We managed 5 meet points, one of which was a stealth surprise right at Mile 23.5, as she entered Central Park.
I saw a Star Wars Stormtrooper. Full white uniform, including helmet and boots. Running. Now and then, I saw Darth Vader running with him.
I saw four men from the United Kingdom Air Force, in full fatigues AND BACKPACKS. At Miles 7 and 14, they were keeping a nice pace. By Mile 20, they were walking brisquely. Amazing.
I saw a 280 lb male fairy. Wings, halo, white tu-tu and wand. He was splendid.
I saw a woman running for U.K. Hospice. She got a lotta cheers from me.
I saw Wonder Woman.
I saw The Blues Brothers.
I saw the escort tracking with Sean " Puffy/Puff Daddy/P Diddy" Combs as he ran.
I saw physically challenged runners on braces, wheelchairs and recumbent bikes.
I saw an immense ostrich/man.
I saw live music bands playing at 138th and Grand Concourse, cheering on the runners.
I saw a house party on the 2nd floor balcony, BLARING a mix of songs that all included running in the titles. ( Born To Run, etc.). The guys up there were cheering on the runners, ALL of whom tipped a hand and a smile their way.
I met great folks from Texas, England, Hawaii, Germany, California and more on the subways as we all raced to meet our folks.
I saw terrible effort, and effortless ease. I saw the bounding rolling landscape of a few thousand runners, bunched in tight in lower Brooklyn, working up 4th Avenue, fresh at Mile 7 .
What a great, fun, uniquely New York Day. My cousin has run 7 marathons now, she said she has NEVER seen anything like the crowd support, almost nonstop through the route. She finished well, and was upbeat and elated with the entire thing. She’s got a newfound love of New Yorkers, who were verbally supportive, and offered oranges, Gatorade, bananas, Power Bars, Water and towels.
What did you see?
