What did you think of "Adaptation"?

I just saw this movie today, and had quite high expectations. It really fell a bit short, however.

I’m not talking about the acting. I thought that all of the stars–Nicholas Cage, Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper, etc.–gave outstanding performances.

I was just underwhelmed by the story, which i thought was pretty lame. I understand that this movie was trying to challenge certain conventions, and i also concede that the way that it went about this was quite clever in some respects. But i just wonder whether Hollywood, and the entertainment industry in general, isn’t already a little too self-indulgent and self-referential. Do we really need to add a new level, a new layer, whereby the process of turning a story into a script becomes the story itself?

I know, i know…there was more to the movie than that. But still, i just found the whole thing vaguely dissappointing.

What did y’all think?

Oops, sorry.

I just noticed that there’s already an “Adaptation” thread under way.

Please ignore my rant.

Yes, there is another Adaptation thread under way, but if you want to find a more literate and intelligent analysis of it than “it sucked ass,” you’ll have to search farther back. This thread, for instance.
