Another Brit here whos more then happy with having a monarch, beats having some wheeling, dealing , conniving politician as head of state.
As to how would royalty not be arrogant and conceited ?
There is a thing called Noblesse Oblige.
Just as new status and new money people can be inordinantly proud of their position, old money and the aristocracy are used to their place in life.
In a democracy of people who aren’t hesitant to express their views anyone who tried to "top it the nob"would soon be brought back down to earth very rapidly.
I quite like the monarchy, as far as you can like people you don’t know. They don’t seem particularly conceited or arrogant to me - I can’t think of any examples of the former and, for the latter, it’s only Harry’s laddish antics that might qualify. They actually seem like a very ordinary family.
You mean you understood the rest of **Lust4Life’s **post?
A “woggle” is a sort of neck-tying thing that Scouts wear. Funny-sounding word -> much humour. L4L’s post was a riff on this and other standard jokes about the Scouts.
(Reading this back, it sounds a little defensive. I would like to make clear that I am not, and never have been, a Scout or member of any other quasi-paramilitary organisation.)
Seconded! Great experiences, community service, useful knowledge and lasting memories. I’m still in touch with two of my buddies from summer camp staff, 30+ years ago.
This was on TV yesterday, and I rewatched most of it. It’s actually funnier than I remember it being, mainly because of Peter O’Toole. Rose Tyler’s Mum was also sympathetic and funny as the love interest. Anyway … If anyone wanted to find the British stereotyping offensive, for fairness’ sake they’d also have to get annoyed at the American stereotyping because there was a lot of that too.
