What do Britons think of the movie "King Ralph"?

Another Brit here whos more then happy with having a monarch, beats having some wheeling, dealing , conniving politician as head of state.

As to how would royalty not be arrogant and conceited ?

There is a thing called Noblesse Oblige.

Just as new status and new money people can be inordinantly proud of their position, old money and the aristocracy are used to their place in life.
In a democracy of people who aren’t hesitant to express their views anyone who tried to "top it the nob"would soon be brought back down to earth very rapidly.

I quite like the monarchy, as far as you can like people you don’t know. They don’t seem particularly conceited or arrogant to me - I can’t think of any examples of the former and, for the latter, it’s only Harry’s laddish antics that might qualify. They actually seem like a very ordinary family.

Didn’t Finland elect a German prince as King after declaring independence from Russia only to have Germany lose WWI and the prince/king “abdicate”?

Had a bit of a brain failure there. I meant Enoch Powell.

I watched it as a Kid. I liked John Goodman. I liked the film. I have nothing against our Monarchy.

That’s an awesome error.

You mean, a monarch might go rivers-of-blood crazy against immigrants?

Yes. Pretty crown, too.

Yeah, or go stir-fry crazy on some other issue of the day. A monarch has the potential to do a fair bit of damage still.

From now on everyone WILL help old people across the road whether they like it or not, or else…

I’m afraid you don’t appear to be carrying a Woggle Sir ?

LOOK I can explain o.k ?
Just listen a minute, I’ve got a wife and kids.

I’m sure you can Sir, take him away guys !

“Woggle”?

You mean you understood the rest of **Lust4Life’s **post?

A “woggle” is a sort of neck-tying thing that Scouts wear. Funny-sounding word -> much humour. L4L’s post was a riff on this and other standard jokes about the Scouts.
(Reading this back, it sounds a little defensive. I would like to make clear that I am not, and never have been, a Scout or member of any other quasi-paramilitary organisation.)

I have been a Scout and a member of other paramilitary organizations and let me just say in response to your post…

…we call them slides in the US.

And I can’t help thinking that you’re missing out on a good deal of harmless fun as a result.

You’ll be telling us you don’t sing “Ging Gang Goolie” next.

Huh !

In denial eh?

A woggles a woggle how ever you try to disguise your ownership of it.

Being serious, the Scouts are a GREAT organisation, and I’d recommend any parents to encourage their kids to join.

I myself used to give ocassional instruction in survival, map reading and shooting for them when a mate who was a scoutmaster asked me .

Seconded! Great experiences, community service, useful knowledge and lasting memories. I’m still in touch with two of my buddies from summer camp staff, 30+ years ago.

This was on TV yesterday, and I rewatched most of it. It’s actually funnier than I remember it being, mainly because of Peter O’Toole. Rose Tyler’s Mum was also sympathetic and funny as the love interest. Anyway … If anyone wanted to find the British stereotyping offensive, for fairness’ sake they’d also have to get annoyed at the American stereotyping because there was a lot of that too.

What would you expect? This kind of story is about the one set of national stereotypes interacting with the other.
