What do in Mi-AMMMMM-i?

I’ll be in the Ft Lauderdale/Miami are for 4 days (December 30-Jan3) for the Orange Bowl (Go Hawks!!).

I’ll be staying at this hotel while there.

While I suspect that the tour organizers might organize some “sight seeing” trips…are there particular spots that you would definitely suggest I might want to catch while there? I’m not yet sure what if anything I’ll do in the way of ground transportation, since this is a “tour package”…but I welcome any suggestions.

You could come see Geobabe and me, but we’ll be in NYC. More later, gotta run back to work.

But wait! We’re leaving for NYC on the 3rd, so we will be here for most of that time. Drop one of us an email if you wanna get together.

We are in Miami, about 25 miles from Ft Lauderdale, which can be two hours driving time on that weekend, sometimes only the normally expected 30 minutes. Most of this is in my neighborhood.

OMG! I was in Miami this summer for business for three days, stayed in that exact hotel. First night I was there, there was a homicide right outside my window across the street. I spent an hour and a half watching the ambulances and police cars on TV and out my window at the same time.
But don’t let that scare you.
Have a great time!

Cheers!

From the address that looks like the marina by the ___ Fish House (name escapes). If it is,that’s where the touristy ocean fishing boats go out for 1/2 day (morning and afternoon) runs.If the promise of catching a sailfish or something excites you, that could make a day.I never fished, but saw some of the catches the boat captains used to hang on those rails on the pier.Guessing that was like trolling for customers.First (and last) time I’ve ever seen a pipefish.

Also,IIRC,it’s near where the Jungle Queen? paddlewheel boat used to leave for the tours that take you on the New River thru Ft.Lauderdale.Kind of an interesting ride.

If you’re into horseracing, you’ll mss the Gulfstream opening, but Calder’s closing weekend features their 1mi.and 1/2 turf race for F&M,among others, that usually draws a respectable field.

There’s usually track buses at tourist locations along the beach.

Hai Alai at Dania, and dog racing at Hollywood, both abt 5-10 mi down Federal Hiway (US1),if you really have a gambling Jones.

If Crazy Gregg’s is still around, you’ll find it at the corner of Las Olas? and the beach.A bit of a hoof from the hotel, but an easy cabride.CG’s was (maybe still is?) the original “Where the boys are”,hangout.

Haven’t been there in about 15 years, but some things never change.
