What Do Roman Trumpets Sound Like? Have They Been Played?

Those extra-long bent trumpets…have any ever been played by modern musicians? What do they sound like? And, are there any modern recordings of Roman music, from the period around AD 100?
Did the classic Hollywood “sandal and toga” films portray Roman music correctly?

I’ve wondered the same thing. There are a couple threads about this in the past. I don’t know how to link, but I searched to “ancient music” and found some threads about it. I started one several months ago, inspired by seeing Ben Hur.

Let me see if I can learn how to link to other threads.

Somnia Imperii CD

Here ya go.

CD page has soundfile with 2 roman trumpets and 2 roman tubas playing plus an incredibly annoying copyright voice over. It sounds just like music from the old gladiator movies.

This roman music page page has a sound sample of two Corna with Tympanum.
-I’m guessing that the corna is the type of horn about which you ask, and is the type illustrated at the top of the link. Googling for “Corna” images is fruitless, unless you’re actually looking for scantily clad italian ladies.
