That’s a big part of it. There’s another part.
I was inspired by a crossword clue, and you’ve identified half of the clue.

Sorry, I was probably being too picky. You got it @El_Famous_Burrito.
These words are in the opening of the Declaration of Independence but not in the US Constitution, along with Bands, Earth, Facts, Forms, Has, Light, Seem, Shewn, Throw, Train, and World to list the 5-letters-and-under words.
Oh, that’s good! I don’t think you were being too picky. I suspected there was something more to it… and I’m happy to discover there was!
I’m curious: what was the crossword clue?
OK, I will dust off and post my words shortly.
Here’s an original list I’ve been noodling on. This one might well be too difficult in its current form, but folks have been solving these quite quickly, so let’s give it a shot!
awash
bias
dill
gel
more
stint
tonne
verde
I’ve got more words in the set that I can post if need be!
If you put Lin- in front of them, you get the last names of dopers???
That would produce some passable user names (even beyond Lingel!). Linmore. Lindill. Lintonne.
OK, here are eight more in the same group:
am
let
new
sin
so
tag
uh
yo
These fit into the same set as the original eight:
awash
bias
dill
gel
more
stint
tonne
verde
I’ll say that the meaning of the words is irrelevant. This a pure word puzzle.
ROT-18 of “bias” is “task”… Just sayin’…
Looks like there’s no ROT-n of awash or let that makes a new word.
Here is a quick, fun (and probably easy) one:
Bloit
Fwee
Glink
Koong
Skreek
Sproing
Twong
Wunk
ROT-n is not the right path (though that would make for a good puzzle).
I think I’ll drop one more batch of words plus a hint, and if that doesn’t get us there, then I will reveal the answer so we can move on. I don’t want to be the fellow that killed this game!
Hint: my previously posted 16 words are from a domestic (i.e., USA) list. These next nine words are from an international (i.e., non-USA) list.
adore
arse
karat
linger
resin
sargent
stroma
taco
tonne (yes, again. not a typo)
Don Martin ?
Yes, Mad’s Don Martin sound effects:
Bloit – Popeye’s muscle popping up
Fwee – Hat flying off man’s head
Glink – Water falling into a tin cup
Koong – Man getting hit in head with wheelbarrow full of cement
Skreek – Shoes skidding to a stop
Sproing – Female frog jumping
Twong – Violin bow launching
Wunk – Prisoner punching guard
Did he do one for a male frog ?
awash River in Ethiopia
bias River in India
dill River in Germany
gel River in Oregon
more River in Penn State
stint River in Sacramento
tonne River in Japan
verde River in Arizona
The solution is not related to rivers, but I will tell you that, among the places you guessed:
Germany is represented somewhere in this list:
And Oregon is represented somewhere in this list:
None of Ethiopia, India, Pennsylvania, California, Japan, or Arizona are represented in my lists.
Oh, and I’ll add that every word on my “domestic” list links up with a US state, and every word on my “international” list links up with a country.
Names of rock bands?
I did notice there is a city in Germany named Nottertal-Heilinger Höhen
But I do not know geography that well to come up with cities for all those freaking words. I’ve never even heard of Nortwaller-Helgenberger Lohan before, or whatever it is called.
Maybe Walla Walla Washington?
State capitals.
Olympia Washington, etc.
ETA: And of course country capitals, like Berlin Germany.
I’m about to shut down for the day, so I won’t be around to come up with a new puzzle.
This put me on the right track:
Words contained in state capitals
awash Olympia Washington
bias Columbia South Carolina
dill Springfield Illinois
gel Baton Rouge Louisiana
more Salem Oregon
stint Austin Texas
tonne Trenton New Jersey
verde Dover Delaware
am Augusta Maine
let Nashville Tennessee
new Cheyenne Wyoming
sin Indianapolis Indiana
so Columbus Ohio
tag Atlanta Georgia
uh Honolulu Hawaii
yo Oklahoma City Oklahoma
ETA: ninja’ed by @Rhodes while I was typing my list.
I have heard of Berlin…
