What do vegans and vegetarians feed their dogs and cats?

Well, would their beliefs cross over to their canine and feline companions?

Bonus question, has anyone ever met an overweight vegan or vegetarian?

1.yes for some. no for others
2.no, but I do know a few chubby ones

See also the thread Vegan pet owners?, and of course Can you feed dogs and cats a vegetarian diet? by the Comrade Great Leader Cecil.

I suppose they would feed a carnivore meat and a herbivore plants. If I were a strict vegan, I think I would still feed a dog some meat from time to time, though. It’s basically a carnivore, so I think that should be the criteria for anyone trying to be morally correct about this whole issue.

Whether or not Great Apes or Simians in general are herbivores or carnivores, I shall leave up to someone more qualified to determine.

Not sure about cats, but dogs certainly can adapt to a lacto-vegetarian diet 100%.Cats are more strict carnivores.I know plenty of people who reared their dogs vegetarian and they were very healthy(but it has to be done when they’re young or they won’t adapt).

An omnivorous diet is best for dogs.Dogs reared on meat alone tend to have BO.

BTW,some years back,I had a non-veg neighbour with a vegetarian dog because meat was very expensive.

I’m not sure if dogs can go vegan though.Cats-certainly not.

As for question 2-yes I know some overweight vegetarians and even vegans but not morbidly obese.Tofu actually contains a lot of fat, besides the protein, and it is possible to overdo the olive oil.
I’m a lacto vegetarian myself.

I know my words are not contributions to the OP and the question…however with that said, I think that people that feed their animals that are omnivorous a strictly vegan diet are insane. Yes many don’t give their animals ANY animal proteins at all, seen it and heard it from vegan people in my life and also in the media. I even poo the idea of a vegetarian diet. Meat is essential for more than just protein but essential fats for their animals.

Yes, cats need animal protein more than our fluffy canines but they need meat (not just protein) from flesh too…not from beans and other vegetarian ideals…if wolves lived on vegetation alone they would die. They kill, are part of the canine family, need animal meats to survive.

I am sorry, I find the diet of a vegan/vegetarian completely inappropriate for dogs and cats. If one must be a vegan or a vegetarian and you choose to have a cat or a dog, ensure they at least can get some organic meat for their health…they need it. Stop with a sole vegetarian diet for them…if you doubt me then please see the book “Natural Pet Care” by Gary Null that has gone deep into studying the ideas of vegan/vegetarian diets and adding protein into the diet for animals. It’s been some time since I have read his book but IIRC he does tell you NOT to cut out meats for your canine and feline companions.
