What Do You Believe is True Even Though You Cannot Prove It?

I believe God does exist, but he’s as indifferent to our lives and well-being as a minimum wage earner in charge of the Wal-Mart pet department.

I believe other intelligent species exist, but we cannot see each other because we use different dimensions and cannot conceive of others.

I believe there is an afterlife, but that each individual soul will be imprisoned by their own consciousness shaped by an entire lifetime that is unchangebale after physical death.

I believe Charlotte Shelby killed William Desmond Taylor.

I believe Thelma Todd’s death was an accident, not suicide or murder.

And I do not believe Lupe Velez drowned in her toilet!

That my legal vote was not counted, or was not counted the way I voted on several issues and candidates in the last election.

That this is hell, right here, right now, and that killing some to let them go to their punishment is fruitless - death is too good for most of them.

That truly would be a hijack of this very good thread, so I’m not going to do it right now. Perhaps some other time I will explain further. Thanks for your interest, though. It really was a moment of Wow!

(And as an aside, I did not see (and never have seen) Tinkerbell-type faeries. And I wasn’t under the influence of anything mind altering or intoxicating.)

Ignorant dumbass

Hey, if you were right about that…

Proof to the contrary, no, but evidence to the contrary- by the truckload. But no reason to hijack when most likely nothing is going to change your mind anyway.

I insist on taking an IOU for this one because I’d love to read it also.

I believe in the multiple universes hypothesis, and I want to believe that someday we’ll learn to usefully interact with other universes. Quantum computing may do just that, actually.

I believe that the 5 supreme court justices who stopped the recount in 2000 were purely politically motivated, and that that was a borderline treasonous act which future historians will greatly bemoan, as I also believe that the Bush presidency will, through the eyes of history, be viewed as a disaster for America.

I believe that George R R Martin will eventually finish writing A Feast For Crows

I believe that the video game idea that I’ve proposed to various companies that I’ve worked for (I write video games) would sell a jillion copies, and someone else is going to do it soon if we don’t, and that the movie idea I have rattling around in my brain would win a jillion oscars

I believe that, if I were in charge of R&D for Magic: The Gathering, I could make the game better

I believe that I am a good person

I believe I agree with Sampiro’s double post.

I believe in God. I have my own proof, but nothing that I could expect other people to understand or accept.

I also believe in reincarnation. This is in part due to Christ’s statements on rebirth, but also in part because I can remember vividly at least one previous life. This is also perfectly consistent with my belief in God, and I believe that he has confirmed this belief to me.

I believe that we all have the right/privilege to choose how our current Life is played out, and that our current Life’s options were chosen at the time of birth. In other words, we chose the life that we life now, for the sake of the lessons that can be learned from that particular Life.

I believe that I could be an engineering major, and get A’s, if I wanted to.

I believe in coyotes and time as an abstract.

I believe my shirt is wearing thin.

I believe in example.

I believe my throat hurts.

And I believe the poles are shifting.
Ok, actually, that’s what Michael Stipe believes.

But I do believe (seriously) that I’ve probably learned more about my fellow Dopers on this thread than anywhere else on the SDMB.

Thank you, masked man!

I believe God came to me in a dream eight years ago even though I am one of the most non-religious and anti-religion people you’ll ever meet. Until now I have only told three people of this. I went against God’s advice, by the way.

I believe in ghosts.

I believe that I am not in complete control of my destiny.

I believe some things are just meant to be.

I believe some people are born evil and I believe I am related to one of those people.

I believe there is other life in the universe.

I believe in reincarnation. I believe one of my cats (now deceased) may have been the reincarnation of my maternal grandfather.

I believe that if I ever had any credibility here before, it’s now gone in most of your eyes.

I have an MBA and most people think I’m extremely intelligent and pragmatic. Little do they know.

Most people would see a Polycarp post to this thread and expect to find a statement of religious belief.

But they’re mistaken.

This I believe.

<hijack>

Okay, I want the details on this story. I especially want to know if God’s advice would have been better for you than what you did end up doing?

</hijack>

I believe that absolutely everything is physical, that nothing nonphysical exists.

I believe that most things are as they seem. We are in fact evolved beings that came to be more or less by chance.

I believe that free will is an illusion and that we are biological robots guided by strict determinism, albeit via processes so complex that we seem to possess free will.

I believe that some day, if humanity survives that long, we will collectively know everything there is to know and have all the answers to all the questions, even the ones we haven’t thought to ask yet. Maybe by then we’ll know what to do with it all.

I believe corporations will rule the land someday. I wouldn’t doubt the possibility of a civil war against them. I believe that stock markets will cease to exist in the future. Think about all the time humans have existed, then think about how long the “stock market” has been around. Something better will come along, after the civil war of course.

I don’t believe in a “God”, but I do believe in something. This “something” is not something that tells people what to do, or how to live. This something could consist of two cells for all I know. But what created that? The cells always were! If God created all creatures, why are humans the only ones to have a set of instructions, in the form of a book? I don’t buy that.

I believe the Internet to be the greatest source of information today. I also believe that it’s only the beginning, and can only get better. It may be the only way humans can interact without government involvement. Although they’re already getting involved, Internet rebels are always one step ahead.

I believe that the ability to learn in today’s kids is exponential. And increases greatly every year. People born today will know 10 times as much, when they’re my age, 24. But the possibility of actually using this knowledge will be hindered by group thinking, and Jerry Springer lifestyles.

WWIII is inevitable. You can only have one group of bullies in the classroom. Once they are removed, the position must be filled.

I believe that Earth doesn’t care what humans do. No matter what, it’s seen worse.

In the grand scheme of things, we only do things to keep ourselves busy, and to make sure those in the future keep busy. It all ends when you die. There is no afterlife, although it would be nice (or would it be bad? ).

I believe, someday, that bio-chemical technology will be able to reveal the inside of the human mind. The ability to see someone’s thoughts, memories, and potential; on a video screen. Synthetic brains will be created in Petri dishes. For the main purpose of storing information. One thousand times the amount of the largest hard drive to date. Access times will be equivalent to that of a human mind, but will work every time, because forgetfulness and emotion will not exist within it. You’ll have the ability to “backup” your brain. After that, I believe religious types will try to stop the destruction of such brains, because it’s a “life”. A new kind of debate ensues.

Corollary to that, you’ll be able to inject bio-chemicals into your system, that can wipe out synapses that would erase your memories (Think Internet Rebels, to hide information from the government). But you’ll be able to control the type of memories you wish to erase, with different types of injections.

I believe there will be adjustable tin foil hats, 'cuz mine is getting tight!

I also believe that his post belongs in the pit.

And correct me if I’m wrong, I believe the OP stated, “I’d love to hear Doper responses…” I believe Crafter_Man did that, whether or not you agree with it.

Then you don’t credit quantum mechanics, or don’t believe that the complex processes go that far down, so to speak? <not a snark – serious Q>

Thanks for the link Polycarp. Reminds me William Faulkner’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech:

I believe I am in love and loved by another.

I believe in the afterlife, but not in any type of higher power.

I believe in extra terrestrial life in a myriad of forms.
