What do you call your boss?

Bosses all the way up to penultimate: First Names
In private? Still First Names

Penultimate and Ultimate: Mr. Last Name
In Private? SpongeBob and Patrick

His first name is Daniel. I call him Daniel, DMan, Big D or Dan. Sometimes I call him by his last name. Occasionally I call people Mr. XXXX. But that is just how I talk.

Cheers to you!

  1. For using penultimate correctly
  2. For reminding me a wonderful duo

Department Chair: First name

Asst. Principals: First names

Principal: First name, occasionally “Jefe” or “Master” in an Igor accent

Asst. Superintendants: First name for the one I like, I refuse to talk to the ones I don’t

Superintendent: See previous refusal to talk to.

I call my boss by his first name, and everyone within the company either by first name, with one exception. We have two people of the same first name, so we call them by their last name (no title, just the last name, similar to a nickname).

Behind his back? I have no nasty names for my boss, he is a cool guy and I like working with him. To people who wouldn’t know his name, I usually just say “my boss” as in “I am so glad I work for my boss, he is a nice guy.”

I call my boss by his first name. It’s a very relaxed environment and he’s extremely cool.

Behind his back, it’s still the first name. As a joke, during staff meetings some of us will call him “Boss” or “Chief”. He finds it funny (he’s got a great sense of humor) and it’s usually good for a laugh or two during meetings. He cultivates a nice, informal environment and is great to work with.

I own my own company. Maybe I should start calling myself Sir

  1. Headmaster (I work in a school, and often parents or visitors are in earshot)

  2. Headmaster (I have no problems with him and it’s his job title)

First names all the way to the director of our agency, Jay, and our govenor, Chris. Legislators get called Senator or Congressman/woman Last Name, unless they invite a more casual first name basis. Unit supervisor that is not my boss but sometimes thinks she is, is called by her first name. Everyone in our section gets called by last name as well…just depends on the moment.

Occasionally I call my boss and his boss the Big Kahuna and the Kahuna Most Large. My boss also has a nickname…Crabbott (last name Abbott and he’s a crab). He’s had that one since before I got here.

Behind my boss’s back when I’m pissed…that asshole we work for; the lying sack of shit; stemwinder.

I call the unit sup all kinds of unflattering things…backstabbing bitch, the bane of my existence, Princess, that woman. I’d say them to her face, but I’ve been told to be nice to her.

I always call them by their first name, no formalities here. I have no reason to call them anything derogatory behind their backs, but at previous jobs I have called asshole bosses by deserving corruptions of their real names. For example, one had the last name of Shirts, so naturally I called him Mr. Shits.

I refer to my boss and colleagues by their first names eventhough some of them have doctorate degrees while I do not (for now).

I’ve only been working there a few weeks and so far have no reason to refer to any of them by anything else behind their backs.

Cunt. Sometimes, Oi, Cunt! This is to his face. Of course, he does the same to me.

Boss: “Hey, get over here, ya cunt.”
Me: “Get fucked. I’m busy.”
Boss: “Now, fuck ya.”
Me: “You fucken prick, this had better be important.”
Boss: “Don’t you fucken give me that shit, or I’ll put a note on your record.”
Me: “Yeah, and I’ll shove it straight up your arse. Sideways.”
Both: “Heheheh”

Really. My boss is a top, top bloke, and I think the above is just a survival response to the corporate environment. We don’t do it within earshot of anybody who might be offended. But there’s a mutual respect, and I work hard for him.

Officially, the organisation is a “first name basis” workplace. If the National Manager came in, and I called him “Mr…” he’d probably politely tell me, “just call me Gr…”

Same here. We have a very informal office. And I don’t call my boss anything behind her back. I like my boss.

Firstname. All the way up. And I like my boss too much to give her an ugly name.

First name for supervisor, first name for division manager, first name for everyone all the way up.
I like my super and manager a lot, so no other names.

To her face: Fearless Leader. Behind her back: Firstname. I like my boss.
Everyone else in the company is Firstname, including the CEO. I like most of them, too.

Once upon a time, I had a Bigboss I called President Jackass. To his face. Behind his back, I called him President Dumbass because he didn’t fire me for it.

First name. My boss is awesome. The entire place is just extremely laidback.

Chairman (Japanese male): Lastname-san
President (Japanese male): Lastname-san, occasionally “skinny motherfucker” (To his face, of course. He’d been making comments to me about my gut.) He’s also the guitarist in a heavy metal band with a well-documented history of unfortunate hairstyle decisions, so other nicknames come up now and then.
VP#1 (Japanese female): Marine-san. A while back she was among three employees with the same first name, so a system was worked out so we knew who was calling for whom. Her nickname became Marine, based partly on her original name but mainly on her attitude.
VP#2 (Japanese male): Abbreviated lastname-chan.
VP#3 (American male): Abbreviated firstname-chan.

For a Japanese office, we’re rather casual. Other than the chairman and pres., nobody is addressed as “lastname-san”. Everyone is either an abbreviation, nickname or first name, followed by -chan or -kun, which are much more informal ways of addressing people.

And yes, title-wise we’re a bit top-heavy, but other than the chairman (who’s semi-retired), everyone has another job (designer, writer, etc.) in addition to their ‘executive’ position.

Just Firstname, to his face or with anyone else in the department (it helps that he’s the only one with that first name in the department). If the occasion comes up, Dr. Lastname with most other folks, since they might be confused by just a first name.

What do I call my boss? “me”. :stuck_out_tongue:

The last boss I had, I’d call him by his first name, or by his first two initials, or Mr. Lastname, or just whatever struck me at the moment. When I was feeling silly I’d call him Boogerhead (to his face). I still call him that sometimes.
