What do you consider "The South"

As I see it…

  • the South is Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and the panhandle of Florida.

  • Texas is its own country - neither Southern or Western, just…Texas. Oklahoma and Arkansas are tributaries of Texas.

  • North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia and Kentucky are “Appalachian.”

Just my own personal interpretation, based on several years living in Virginia and South Carolina – could be contrary to the facts on the ground.

IMHO - That’s as definitive geographic representation of Dixie as you’ll ever see. Many people forget to include eastern Texas and the southern portions of Illinois and Indiana are culturally much like the Appalachians, just flatter geographically - a point I never realized until living in central Illinois for 10 years.
