When Donald Wildmon’s AFA was actually getting attention for announcing boycotts of advertisers of TV shows he deemed objectionable, I paid attention in case there was a business that had something I could use. In the late 1980s, both a minister-friend & I made a point to go to Burger King partly for that reason.
Since the mention of Domino’s Pizza in REALITY BITES, I also tend to pick Domino’s if the decision is mine alone.
When the SBC & the AoG both were boycotting Disney, I’d go see its movies & visit D-land in California.
So what do you support at least partly because someone else is boycotting it?
Back when the AFA called for the Target boycott, I made a determined effort to start shopping there more often, with the result that I now prefer to shop there rather than at Wal-Mart.
When Hardee’s started the “Monster Thickburger” campaign in the midst of possible lawsuits against the fast food joints (while the other places started pretending they were “healthy”), I immediately ate there.
Surprisingly, I found their quality had improved in the decade since I had eaten there, and have enjoyed them (in moderation) since.
[aside] One of my business clients is a sister of the CEO. When I found this out, I asked her to pass him a message thanking him for giving the middle finger to the industry with the Thickburger commercials.
Not only did she pass the message- I received a ridiculous amount of coupons for free stuff.
I ate whale once a while back. I told people I related the story to later it was done to piss off Green Peace, but I really just wanted to see what it tasted like. (Not very good, as it turns out)
It’s not exactly a counterboycott, but in the realm of shopping at a place because people hate them, now that Montreal’s queer bookstore has closed I order all of my queer books from Little Sister’s (note: mentions erotic books and products on front page) in Vancouver, which has suffered terribly from arbitrary and, in fact, illegal censorship imposed by Canada Customs.
One of my classmates brought some whale blubber this semester –you’re right, it tastes awful. But it never had occurred to me before that it was possible to piss off Greenpeace in that manner! My life just got a bit better!
Don’t know if it counts, but Time magazine ran a piece on Mitt Romney emphasizing that he is a Mormon over and over, possibly because they were hoping to push the Religious Right into not voting for him. Partially as a result, Romney is now my second choice for President (after Giuliani).
There is a local movie reviewer (Chris Hewitt) who I read regularly. He doesn’t always hate good movies, but I can tell if he objects to a movie in a certain set of ways, it probably has something to recommend it.
I also have Ann Coulter’s latest on reserve at the library based on the fact that she pisses off a good many liberals on the SDMB.
So did a lot of people, apparently. France’s exports to the US actually increased during the O’Reilly-induced noise over a French boycott.
To protest the Intelligent Design nonsense, I considered buying rather stupidly designed products. My wife apparently liked the idea. She bought a broom with a head that freely revolves on the broomstick.
Ditto on Walmart. I seem to be unwittingly counter-boycotting a lot of popular yuppie boycotts, since they are all invariably contrary to economic sense.
Ha ha…that makes me think of one. I guess I never really sought out albums with that parental advisory label on them, but when I was younger, and I would buy one that had it, I always was a little more satisfied with my purchase!
after the flap about the Danish newspaper (Jyllands Posten) publishing the cartoons of mohammed.
Danish cheese and beer! I figure every bottle I drink is a blow for Freedom!
