What Do You Like/Dislike About Las Vegas?

jharvey963, I’d always intended to go to Las Vegas for my vacation, cause I’d wanted to see the Siegried & Roy show. After the accident happened and the show was cancelled, I lost interest. Has the show started up again or are you only able to see the tigers as part of an exhibit? Please let me know.

So I was walking down the Strip with my lovely Ex on one arm and her lovely GF on the other, speaking in English. Little Mexican guy and gave me flyers for hookers.

I ask him in Spanish ‘Does it look like I need a Hooker?’

Anyway, the guys handing out the leaflets all have these t-shirts with a woman in profile. Strippers! Totally Nude! Direct to your Room! I found the Cabo and bought a shirt. Best LV souvenir ever.

I’m loving this thread. Last summer I hatched a plan to take my best friend of almost 30 years to Vegas for his 40th birthday. Three of us (well, 4, my other buddies wife is coming. She won’t let him go to Vegas without her) will be going in the middle of July, around his birthday. The heat will suck, but from what I can tell, it is the off season (more or less) and the room prices will be lower.

I didn’t hear anything about the show starting up again. To my knowledge, you can only see the cats at the exhibit. BTW, the Secret Garden and Dolphin Encounter are co-located, so you get to see both.

J.

The show will not be revived, but you didn’t miss anything. Lots of boring illusions done on an obscene scale. Worst Magicians Ever.

DMark, I finally got around to looking at your web site last night. I had to laugh that some of the information on strip bars was almost verbatim to what I just gave in another recent thread. Honest, I didn’t copy from you! I like the information on the site. I can only think of one minor complaint in that the font was a little hard on my eyes (actually, it made it hard to go back to my normal desktop).

I have two questions for you if you have the time. First, I read what you said about the Tropicana and I wasn’t encouraged. That’s where our friends decided we would stay this year (after two years at TI). Do you have any more comments on Tropicana? Any tips for making a stay there as good as possible?

Second, what would you say is the best “American style” (ie. steaks, no particular ethnicity, etc.) restaurant in the $20-40/entree price range? To give you a little background, we usually have dinner at Margaritaville and Kahunaville at some point during the trip. After three years though, I feel like we are stuck in a rut. Margaritaville was a blast the first year when they had a reggae band and the balloon hat guy hit our table. The food was just ok. The last two years have been pretty ho-hum. I’m thinking it should be more of a lunch stop for a plate of nachos. Kahunaville is good, but I would like to find some place new.

Thanks for any input!

Hello all! Thanks for keeping this thread alive! I know I have promised an update to my site, and I actually have a good start with a total new design - however, I just started teaching at a college, and to make things even more fun, I am taking the final project course at UNLV for Internet Design and Technology and have three weeks to finish a huge project they have presented.

Thus, my update with the new design will probably not happen until mid-February, at the earliest. Sorry. I have updated some info on the original site - just not changed any design features yet.

medstar - don’t give up hope of seeing Siegfried and Roy someday back on stage. Roy has been getting out more and more, and although it is still painful to see him after the accident, he is actually doing better every time you see him. They have also publicly hinted that a new show, sometime down the road, is not totally out f the question.

RougeRacer - thanks for the compliment on my website info, and yes, the background is GONE in the next version I am doing! It seemed like a good idea at the time (just like that aqua-marine leisure suit I thought looked pretty nifty in the early 80’s).

Sorry to rain on your parade about The Tropicana - but it is sorely in need of remodeling and most of the rooms are less than wonderful - still, the location is fantastic and in good weather, the pool alone is worth putting up with those rooms. BTW, they are one of the few hotels on The Strip that really heats the pool in the winter that makes the water bearable (OK, not the entire pool, but a least a good chunk of it for swimming) and they DON’T allow anyone under 21 to use that winter heated pool (no kids allowed!). And regarding the rooms - as I mention on my site, unless you eat some bad shrimp, you probably won’t be in the room that much anyway - just a place to crash after a night on the town, so what real difference does it make? And it is not like there are cockroaches running around - the rooms are simply old and have a slightly musty look and smell. But that does mean the rooms are generally cheaper than other hotel casinos, so you have some extra money for other sins.

Regarding restaurants - gee, so many…and they change all the time. Il Forneo is at the NYNY, and although they specialize in Italian food, and are an upscale chain of restaurants with locations around the world, they do have steaks and other selections that might interest you. My SO loves the Shrimp Scampi there! (Check the menu before you go in.) Plus, great decor for the price - looks much more expensive than it really is. They also have a restaurant at Green Valley Ranch.

You might also want to try the Cheesecake Factory in the back of the shopping mall of Caesars - another West Coast chain. Not only do they have fantastic cheesecakes, they have a great selection of food that would be in your price range, and I have always been happy with the quality and portions. It gets a tad crowded during the usual dinner/lunch hours, but if you go a little early, or a little later, you might miss the crowd. Hope this helps, and if any other Dopers have some suggestions, feel free to join in!

A timely thread. I find I may be in LV for 2-3 days at the end of April for business, and I’ll be a first time visitor! Lots of good info here. I’ll bookmark your website, DMark.

Ah, Vegas virgins…love 'em. Let me know what you think…and there has been some talk of a Vegas Dopefest soon…April sounds as good as any other month, so keep us informed of your plans.

We used to enjoy the steakhouse at the top of Binion’s, but that was back when Binion owned it. Haven’t been there since they sold it. The steakhouse in the Stardust was good, too. Now I hear it’s closing (man, I’m dating myself here…).

Sadly the Stardust closed its doors on November 1, 2006. No word yet on when they intend to implode it, but they are building a $5 BILLION dollar hotel/casino on the site - which by the way, it was recently reported on the news that it is the largest single piece of land on The Strip; it goes from Circus Circus, back to Industrial Road, and all the way over to Desert Inn. I believe the new casino is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
